EPC Fluctuations

How often do you get them and how long do they last for?

Hey everyone,

For the past 10 days my EPC has lowered by a 1/3. So far everything is keeping steady at that point.

I was just curious if you find you get fluctuations in in your EPC and how long they last for. In the past two years, this is the longest time I have found it last this long. I'm not trying to be paranoid, I'm just trying to prepare myself and figure out how to get my earnings back to the normal point.

Thanks in advance for your help! :)

wfernley,

I never look at individual or isolated values. Rather I would recommend that you look at moving averages of 31 days (i.e. a month). This has given me a much better picture than looking at shorter periods. Even a 7 day moving average (which I do track as well) does not help much - the "swings" of the EPC pendulum are still too big.

Another way to compare the values is to always look at the same periods, e.g. always accumulate/look at values for Saturday-Friday. Here I am seeing swings as well, but all-in-all everything has been OK recently.

Thank you for your replies.

That is exactly why I'm not getting too scared yet. It is best to look over your stats monthly and see how things are going. I have been graphing any stat I can regarding AdSense and even website stats.

I have been hovering the forums and found that, like you said, nothing major has happened recently and not many people are complaining about dropping EPC so I'm sure its not an issue with everyone.

The first half of Jan was fine and the second half has not been. I will have to see how things work out for the first half of Feb.

If my EPC does not go back to the average rate, what could be the reasons? I haven't made any huge updates to the site. Could it be smart pricing?

The only difference in January was that I had an increase in visitors and clicks. My CTR increased by about 1% over the average of Dec. and Nov. Is it possible that my EPC has lowered because I am receiving more clicks? Could it also be possible that the increase in clicks has caused smart pricing to come into effect because most of my clicks are not converting?

Thanks again for replies.

did the nature of your traffic change? i.e., search engines vs. viral links? how much new content did you create compared to last month?

if you have the right channels set up, you should be able to see if the epc change is across the board, or it's confined to a certain page design, a certain sector, etc.

That is a good idea. Tomorrow I will examine the entire month and compare it to Dec and Nov. I will see which channel lowered in EPC and see if anything caused the change.

As for content change. Nothing has really changed over the past month. Most of my traffic increase was due to gaining rankings.

i was asking about new content because it can have a higher-than-normal epc, so if you are able to divert a significant percentage of your traffic to new content, on a repeat basis, the end result could be an increase in your average epc.

if you never added any content, and you were coming off of a period of new content addition, it could translate as a decline in average epc.

my epc always seems to decrease at the end of the month.

Everyone will have different experiences. 12 months of stats tracking tell me that my EPC pattern is :

1st week - high
2nd week - average
3rd week - low
4th week - low then high (last 3 days of the month)

I assume this has to do with advertisers' starting the month strong, then going easy midway to make sure they last the month and giving one big push at the end of the month, when folks get their pay checks and are more apt to buy...

YMMV...

Thanks again for your replies.

That is an interesting concept about EPC being higher on new content. I will have to do some testing ;)

Today so far has been good. Earnings are average but my EPC is back to where it was. We will have to see how things go ;)
