Suppose I wanted to build a skin care site. Should I build one big site that contains pages about different aspects of skin care (acne, wrinkles, etc.) or should I have multiple sites, one for each skin care topic?
Or let's say I was building a site about pets. Is is better to make one site that contains content and pages about many different kinds of pets, or should I have a separate website for each type of pet?
I guess I'm trying to figure out if it's better to have a smaller, targeted niche site or one that's larger and more broad overall. Hope this question makes sense. Thanks!

My own in-a-nutshell opinion is that you'd be better off having one authoritative site about skincare than a whole slew of separate sites about wrinkles, cellulite, blemishes, etc., because:
1) A network of interlinked sites build around keywords may look like spam to a search engine (and is likely to look like spam to users); and...
2) If you don't interlink the pages or sites, you can pretty much give up on anything but search traffic (repeat visitors, for example).
