This continues the discussion about whether one can use AdSense on pages with Amazon Recommended Product Links that is at [link removed because it gives a 404 error. It has the same title as this post.]

This is just a possible heads-up about the Recommended Product Links. When I went to the Choose Content page (after Build Links) to create my first link of this type, I found this note on the page:

Note: You may notice a wider variety of products displayed in Recommended Product Links after you place them on your Web site. We are testing ways to help you earn more by changing the way we select products for these placements -- such as using Amazon technology to recommend items similar to those you have referred in the past or to select products related to your Web page content. The goal of these changes is to increase the number of clicks and resulting purchases originating from your links. However, please be aware that products may be displayed that are not related to your site or content. If you prefer for your links to not be included in this test, please contact us. Be sure to let us know whether you're using keywords or a subcategory.

This experimentation is creative and I like it a lot, but note the phrase in bold. This seemed close enough to being contextual that I felt I'd better opt out of the test program.

This is the first situation where I've had to consider what is the meaning of "contextually targeted". It's not very clear. What ad isn't contextually targeted in some way, even if it's only manually by the site builder? Even my individual hand-selected product ads are chosen to suit the page they're on.

For anyone who doesn't know, you create the Recommended Product Link ads by giving Amazon some keywords (at the time you create the ad), and they serve ads on your page that are relevant to those keywords. So you are still providing the "contextual" part manually, but they are generating the specific products by an automated means.

Even after opting out of the test, I'm nervous about using these. Has anyone actually had any trouble with Google AdSense as a result of using these Amazon ads?

This thread shows a letter someone received from Google, saying that Recommended Product Links on the same page as AdSense would be a TOS violation. That was May 2006.

I wouldn't take the chance. Take the time to handpick books that really match the article or other page content. You earn more money that way anyway.

Recommended Product Links often do not display what you want anyway--they often default to an orange banner or a generic bestseller list. As annej says, handpick your products.

I have hard coded list of books, dvds and other stuff related to my site topic. Amazon product links wasn't doing any good to me so I went back to old good method.
