I can get by in .asp (just) for basics and I'm OK at html. But has that helped? Not sure. I started my site back in 1999 and the html was very basic. I concentrated on content, as long as the site looked OK and functioned. That basic design didn't stop the site getting plenty of organic traffic, and the crappy html hasn't stopped the site getting to the top of serps.
As time has moved on I've learned to make the site look better and be more compliant, but that's mainly to try and keep the position I have for my keywords (2 or 3 in Google).
As regards making money - yes it does make money. I can't give up the day job, but it is a good regular income.
My most profitable site was built thanks to an incredible script alone and I don't even write content - others write it for me. Therefore, by knowing how to program you can actually make new concepts and not just the same: Niche - write - write - write - write.
To each his own. There's a lot to be said for the credibility and trust that come from an established byline or "personal brand." Think Rick Steves as opposed to TripAdvisor, to use just one example.
Of course, there's a place for both approaches, and the best approach depends on one's individual strengths. (In my opinion, mom-and-pop publishers will find it difficult to compete effectively with programming-driven megasites in the "Web 2.0" space, while big corporate sites will find it difficult to compete effectively with owner-publishers in the "handcrafted content" space in the same way that Wonder Bread or Hostess can't afford to compete with an artisan bakery or a local pastry-shop chain in the "handcrafted baked goods" space.)
I personally only know mabye 65% of html code. I know the basic stuff to create a nice looking site. There are thousands of scripts out there.
I have what people would say are great skills in HTML.
I'm very good at CSS
I'm doing quite alright when programming PHP.
I have been making pages with HTML and PHP for more than 5 years,
I have had adsense on one of my pages for about 1 year. (this is an online store)
I'm a $100-$140 a month earner
So, no! I don't think it helps to be a computer techie.
Because of my interest in programming, I'm not making as much money as I could - because I am all hooked up on the wrong things.
For me, it's more fun to make a program work as it should, than to sit down for a couple of hours to create valuable content.
So in my opinion, the only thing that matters when it comes to making money from adsense, is to find the right NICHE, Having the perseverance(?spelling?) to MAKE great VALUABLE CONTENT, writing about something you really CARE ABOUT, and as someone else said here: NOT beeing greedy!
But hey.. that's just my opinion.
