Isn't it so easy to blame others?

This last week or so, as those regular readers of my whinging posts will already know, I have seen strange earnings and "other stuff"!

What had I forgotten in all this analysis?

Doh! Doh! Doh! Doh! Doh!...There are other search engines...DOH! How BIG a DOH! could I have?

The most recent MSN update, from where I had at least a 10% referral rate, has obliterated my MSN SERPS!...this is probably more commonly known as MUBAR.

Now I can drink in peace...errr...pieces...from a glass?

So far, Google has the most stable serps (for me). Yahoo! and MSN! are really FUBB.

>>>What had I forgotten in all this analysis?

I requested in your last weekend's post about stats not updating that it would be helpful to check your traffic logs.

I don't see how you could possibly forget to check your logs when I suggested in your very own thread that you should do that. So you can't excuse your posts by saying you forgot. ;)

In order to be useful, the "stats not updating threads" must have information about traffic.

[webmasterworld.com...]

Would be helpful in these kinds of threads if your observations were correlated with what your traffic logs. On a weekend day it could likely be slow traffic so it's extra important to correlate it with what your logs say.

Because we're all human. I've come to regard WebmasterWorld as an integral part of my day because there are folks like Opti who understand. Most of us run full time businesses and day jobs in addition to our websites and human that we are, when something screws up, we turn to where we know there are like-minded folks. I don't think WebmasterWorld realizes that if webmasters were ALL super self-sufficient, there would be absolutely no need for WebmasterWorld to exist.

I agree with you 100%. But when we turn to like-minded folks we have to take the next step and act on the advice received. Otherwise you end up spinning your wheels making the same error weekend after weekend.

I applaud Opti for being honest enough to come forward. But I have to be honest and confess to being somewhat disappointed because it's clear that the "AdSense Is Stuck" threads are less useful because, except for a very few members who cite traffic information, they consistently ignore traffic logs.

Aw Foo! Now you're going to take away our stats are stuck threads. Next to Google banning threads they are my favorites! :)

I must say that it was existing quite healthily when I joined and my impression certainly was then that it was aimed at and joined by mainly professional webmasters.

You may well be right that there is a larger audience and participation from part-time or hobby webmasters these days - perhaps even a majority attracted by Adsense - but it would be foolish for anyone looking to improve (surely all of us here) to ignore the traits that enable professionals to remain professional...

Martinibuster,

Does this mean that we're engaged or something like that there?

:)

I recall (perhaps wrongly - the brains getting befuddled) that sometimes the "stats are stuck" threads confirm that indeed the stats are stuck!
It can save a lot of time and effort tracking down your own problem - checking traffic logs and such like - it you first establish it isn't a SNAFU at G's end.

Still Opti, have to concede a point here to martiniB

Yep, no defence other than to say that I hadn't realised without an in-depth beer analysis that I had still been getting 10% of my traffic from FUBB MSN...

Beer analysis is always good since, for obvious reasons, one looks at the figures from another angle and, volia, there's the probable answer.

HOWEVER (don't you just love that?) checking the MSN SERPS this afternoon and all is "as it was" for me...huh?

Now I am confused, was my beer lying to me?

So MB, do I check my logs again or do I throw everything in the air and have an afternoon of beer and TV, then check the logs again?

Too much analysis methinks...I sometimes wonder just how they came up with an eight letter word to describe a mathematical investigation and concluded it should start with the usual adverb prefix for retentive? :-)
