Yesterday I was composing a new historical page dealing with a late-Victorian musician in Plymouth UK. I put in a captioned picture of a Plymouth theatre, I put in a review from a long-defunct Plymouth newspaper. No other page on my site deals with this area.
When I went to preview that new page on my own machine, Google instantly served up a "Come to Scenic Devon" advert! The Devon advert is not served for other pages on the site (as far as I can see).
This is pretty good: even though my site is not about travel, someone researching this particular history might well decide to go visit the regional library in Plymouth or see the theatre--much more likely than J. Random Surfer.
I recently found a page (I can't find it now... was on one of those google weblogs, I think) where you could type in a URL and find out what AdWords AdSense would serve.
Well, with a couple of sites, I learned that typing in [domain.com...] resulted in wildly different ads than when typing in [domain.com...]
What's up with that?
It would be great if adsense publishers would have a report telling them, which pages are the ones getting the clicks. In my case, I would assume that most of the people are clicking from the index page, but I get people coming into my site through a lot of different pages, and being that there seems to be a large range in the amount paid for clicks, knowing what pays the most would help my evil plans :D
It would be great if more emphasis is given to keywords in the text as opposed to meta=”keywords”. This is just a guess, but I think that the adsense index and algo takes into consideration the keywords in your {head} substantially. The reason I am saying this is that I am a very lazy webmaster and usually reuse most of a page changing only the {title tag} and if I am feeling industrious the {content tag}. Even after considering that my site’s content is related, I still see too much of a one theme as opposed to really fine targeting. For example:
A page about commercial loans will have the following adsense ads:
Commercial loan, Commercial loan, Real Estate loan, Factoring
A page about business valuation will have the following adsense ads:
Commercial loan, Commercial loan,Valuation, Real Estate loan
A page about small business accounting will have the following adsense ads:
Factoring, Commercial loan, Small Business accounting software, Factoring
As you can see, it would be much better if the bolded results were in the first position and the users would have more similar choices.
Based on all my research, I was under the impression that the adsense ads would come from the adwords database, but this does not appear to be quite the case. They may be comming from a VERY small subset of adwords inventory. I say this because I have 1 very targeted site on a subject that has TONS of ads in adwords, but my site just keeps repeating the same 2 adsense ads over, and over, and over.....
I have contacted adsense, but as of yet have received no reply.
