AdSense click-tracking for IE7 and FF, etc?

Most of the current crop can only track IE6, which is going away...

Hi Y'All,

I was just re-reading [webmasterworld.com...] and similar...

Does anyone know what the current state of the art is for supporting IE7 and FF1/FF2, etc? Since half my users are on FF, and MicroSoft is going to force an upgrade to IE7 as a "security patch" fairly soon, the issue is getting pressing!

The AdLogger (JavaScript) code looks fairly nice and simple and the best I've seen so far.

What other examples are there that we should know about (NO URL DROPS PLEASE)?

There are different browser share stats, but they seem to be around the following, currently:

80% IE6
10% Firefox 1.5
2% Firefox 1.0
2% Safari
2% IE7
(etc.)

In the official IEBlog (July 26, August 30...) we can read for example "Windows Update’s Automatic Updates will offer IE7 to everyone by default, but it won’t force you to install it". However, "Of course, we hope our users will upgrade".

Internet Explorer 7 was planned for the fourth quarter of this year. The current IE7 version is Release Candidate 1, for final testing prior to launch.

Hi,

As I say for me FF is already ~50%, but we did see a range of % share by type of site in another thread.

The realy point is, IMHO, if the click-trackers only work with IE6 and almost all of IE6 goes away quickly, this will cripple or at least badly skew any click stats that we're collecting. The exact percentage of who is using exactly which browser whose stats we can't track won't matter much!

Damon, yes, I've just described the current situation, that seems to be approaching an important change soon, with the imminent launch of Internet Explorer 7.

Is it completely verified that the AdSense tracking scripts do not work for ads on IE7? It's difficult to find info on this matter.

If true, it can be a serious obstacle for the work of many publishers, for whom 200 AdSense channels are really not enough. Trackers are also useful for invalid click detection through IP monitoring, and as well to analyze referrers, keywords, what your users are searching for, etc.

Is AdLogger the only one that will work beyond the upgrade to IE7?

I'm not sure, but it sounds like Internet Explorer 7 is, maybe, going to be a similar case to Firefox.

You know, most trackers cannot track clicks on AdSense ads on Firefox. They track clicks on IE (until IE6 at least). There is one, asrep, that says to track Firefox clicks (by very indirect -Sherlock Holmes style- methods), and therefore it possibly will track IE7.

I don't know if this is also the case of other well-known trackers such as adlogger, adsensegold, etc. But of course their developers need to adapt the scripts very soon, if they are not doing it already, before the launch of IE7.

About those indirect methods to track clicks on Firefox (maybe also useful for IE7), that developer suggested how he was doing it on an old WebmasterWorld thread, AdSense Tracking Script within the TOS [webmasterworld.com].

Internet Explorer 7 has been released on October 18. It can be downloaded now. The automatic update distribution -optional- will start in November. More info, on the official IEBlog [blogs.msdn.com], a featured WebmasterWorld thread [webmasterworld.com], etc.
