So these link units I keep hearing about -

They have a header that reads "Ads by Google"
They take you to a page that looks like the google SERP and give you a list of links to choose from
Your user has to click on one of these to count as a "Click" in your adsense account.

Are these really working for people (better than a regular ad unit?)

If so...WHY?

use channels to determine which locations work for adsense ads, then maybe test the link units in places where the regular adsense ad didn't perform well.

the link unit may not work well in that location either, but you won't lose income by giving up an adsense location that works.

My "link units" work great! The secret is knowing where to place them.

I usually put a wide adlink bar near the "heading" area of my pages (where I have my H1-H2-H3 tags) so that it appears to be a menu to visit.

Link Units perform well enough for me that if I had to choose them or the regular style ad blocks I'd choose link units in most cases.

The reason I think they work is because people gets more choises.

First of all, they -choose- to press the links that have "Ads by Google" on top, don't they?

They are actually looking for information or products which has something to do with the link (ad unit) they pressed.

They see Google, a serious search engine provide them with more targeted links to what they are looking for.

And finally: When they already have pressed the first link, if they don't like what they see, they still have to press a button to get back to the page they were on before. BUT they pressed an ad, maybe because the last page they were viewing was boring to them. So they are thinking: "Why not try THIS link, maybe I'll find something interesting?"

People are curious, they easily get bored, and are always ready to find something new and exciting.

I think this is why ad units works well on some pages.

My AdLinks earn me about 54~55% of total revenues.

They're good, they are very, very good once your visitors get used to them. Mine surf AdLinks as qualified Google ads, I'm convinced of that!

And if you're worried it's short-lived, my AdLinks have performed like this from the very start of them:-)

Positioning and blending is important however do not try to disguise them, visitors will be mightily annoyed if you do that.

The horizontal AdLinks, from most posts, do not work as well as the box ones however this really would depend on the site.

I have one adlinks unit on my home page, and it earns about a third of my total income. People come to that page from an SE and may not see what they want, and the adlinks keywords give them other choices (usually you see two or three-word phrases related to my site's content but not exactly identical.) I had previously tried standard ads on that page, and they did not work well.

You have to be willing to experiment, see what works.

Hi

AdLinks have been excellent for me too, since the start.

I usually use a box top-left, but have a couple of places where the 15px high strips work well and are unobtrustive.

Rgds
