I wonder if todays events are just an aberration or if anybody else is noticing changes

Seems like they altered auction parameters.(a glitch in the Matrix)
I have a general niche say cool widget_pictures then my pages are biz widget_pictures, science widget_pictures etc 24 catorized pages.
Well the general higher volume, less paying cool widget_pictures usually override the speced ads of the individual pages which I don't mind they might be 10-15 cents. The other more targeted pages are now holding their specified say biz ads on the biz widget_pictures page, those have higher clicks 25-40 cents.
Conclusion: They demoted the importance of higher CTR that lets more active ads override ads bidding more money in the auction. If it is true, it's another nail in the MFA coffin.

Indeed, if ctr was to play a secondary role in ad placement and more importance placed on bidding price, it would be in our best interest (from a d&S point of view) to to allow as many participants in as possible, would it not?

If the influence of CTR superiority over money is reduced then we can open our filters and let the auction do its work. If this is what we think it is there would still MFAs left but their numbers would be greatly reduced and profit spreads for the survivors would be marginal.

I am sure there is a master plan to all this. If not, they would be fools and I don't think they are fools.
I fully expect a filter by URL option tomorrow, 200 per each URL.
I am just thinking the auction change is a double edged sword effect.
Basically, you want to knock these people down so hard they can't get back up.
I'll be waiting for the cries of pain in the Adwords forum.

I have 3 sites in 3 different niches each one has its own group of MFAs trying to get in. Ofcourse there are big nasty stuff like ebay for each but it is mostly very targeted ones.

I've got ads for rubber clamps, latest stock picks, domain names and shares ads in German appearing on a travel site :o
Anyone else seeing anything odd?

Yesterday I noticed my site had an ad for McDonald's.
I noticed an ad for McDonald's on one of my pages not too long ago. As I recall, the page had a reference to "fast food, Italian style" or something similar. The page was about another topic, but the "fast food" reference must have triggered the McDonald's ad. I've seen that happen before: Sometimes the ad bot grabs a word or phrase almost at random from the body text and assumes that the word or phrase is the topic of the page.

I'd *really* like to get rid of all of these bozos.
i also saw the mcdonalds ad on my site, but there was no food-related text anywhere on the entire site.

Some might argue that McDonald's is a "quality advertiser." It's certainly more mainstream than the MFA sites that people here are always complaining about, with a total advertising budget of $770 million.
As for a "lack of quality advertisers," I haven't noticed any shortage lately for my topics, and EPC/eCPM trends have been positive. If the sky is falling, the chunks aren't yet landing in every neighborhood.
Useless as ads are, for a specific widget service in NY to a someone in India, this is a change from the usual practice of filling those slots with MFA's.
No sign of MFAs on my sites, auction working really well, eCPM up.
Last week was one of my best weeks ever with adsense, however those advertisers have probably gone into hibernation right now. If one is to believe the myth about monthly budgets, I still can't understand why budgets are set on a monthly basis. Yearly budgets, semi yearly and quaterly budgets make sense. But monthly? We'll, it must be true because as surely as the sun rises, adsenses always slows down with the changing and beginings of each month.

Based on my experience a page with a good targeting and a single ad block can make a substantial amount of revenue and that just based on my modest experience.
If EFV site enjoys more traffic than my site, which it probably does then he could be doing very well.
but the reason he hasn't seen a shortage of advertisers is because:
1) he isn't giving 'em enough display space
2) he doesn't have enough advertisers to fill up more ad blocks
i suspect the latter, in part because he has lots of dead space right next to each picture in his photo galleries.
1) To provide a better user experience than competitors who clutter their pages with ads.

As for why the display ad is bigger than the AdSense leaderboard, that's easy: The IAB Universal Ad package has two sizes that fit my layout (728 x 90 and 160 x 600), and I've got room for one of each, but not two of the same size. The AdSense leaderboard was already working well, and I liked the look of the 160 x 600 display-ad format compared to the AdSense wide skyscraper, so my decision was easy.
and you apparently get enough traffic to ignore optimizing those big blank spots on your gallery pages... some of us would kill to have that kind of traffic.
no, you use only one block of adsense because a cpm banner pays better than a second block of adsense... adsense does require enough advertisers in the sector to support that second block.
Danimal, I'm in a better position than you are to know why I use only one AdSense unit. (I was using one AdSense unit before I began running display ads about a year ago.)
Believe it or not, some of us really do think about the user experience and making a good first impression on readers. Over the long run, self-restraint is likely to pay off in a better reputation, better press coverage, better industry relationships, more inbound links from non-commercial authority sites, more interest from display advertisers, and maybe even better search rankings than we'd get from trying to squeeze out every possible nickel from each square inch of space. Obviously, a for-profit site needs to turn a profit, and a full-time publisher needs to earn a living. But that doesn't mean the publisher has to let the advertising tail wag the dog.
It appears to be full, and not accepting.
