What I'd like is some way of putting a skyscraper on the edge of the page, but only if the browser window is wide enough that it will fit comfortably. (I use a single column layout with a fixed em width central column.)

I thought always on this idea.

If ad insert by javascript would be allowed, no problem,
but since ad insert by javascript is AFIAK not within TOS,
how to make it?

Hi,

¿Have you read the recent post at Google's Blog "The ABCs of A/B Testing"?.

I guess that is not allowed to put links of any kind at this forum, but you can find the article easily (first Google result).

I think that probably you could tweak it a bit to support what you need and request Google Adsense support for permission to use it.

Please, tell us how it goes.

I did something like this recently and Google approved it. As long as you are as non-invasive as possible and it's done for a valid reason -- i.e. to prevent AdSense ads from being obscured by the need for side-scrolling -- I predict they will say yes.
