i'm curious for my sites -- what adsense blocks seem to work the best? maybe it's because i'm a bit old school when designing ads in, but banners and link units seem to fit in easier.
but, there are box-style ads, and all other kinds.
what generally works better? i have found some success in link units, so i'd think if you can display 4 or 5 ads per ad unit, you've got more chance to get a relevant click.
what's the consensus?
I personally have found that on some pages a banner works best, and on some pages a rectangle placed centrally works best. I also have found that adlinks works better on some pages than others, and some pages don't work on adsense at all so are ad-free.
Placement is worth experimenting with too - I doubled income by moving from a left skyscraper to the current design of central rectangle. Have a look at the heatmap in the adsense help section for ideas as to where Google have found that the ads tend to work best.
Blending of ad borders and background colours can help, as can having a contrast.
Also, don't fill the pages up with loads of ad blocks. Makes pages look ugly and in most cases actually lowers your income. Many people find that a minimalist approach actually earns them the maximum income.
Even though wide ad formats (Leaderboard 728 x 90, skyscraper 160 x 600, and big rectangle 336 x 280) often perform very well on most sites, it doesn't mean that these are the ones you should use.
Try setting up a small plan on how to test your page.
Try different ad formats, ad placement and color. Change them once a week and use channels to check which ads perform the best.

Good luck!
