Is it me or are the "skyscraper" ads not wide enough

to fit the text contained therein?

I haven't modified their code and the column I have it in is wider than the Adsense include but letters are getting chopped off (namely, on long URLs). Am I doing something wrong?

No. Long urls sometimes get chopped off.
