Why are my Adsense Ads so totally dis-connected?

How does Adsense pick the ads to place on a page?

I am new to the Adsense and so far have been amazed by the lack of connection between the ads and my page content.
For example, I have the word electrician and electrical on a page 2o+ times and my ads are for concrete. I do write about concrete in other areas of the site but it takes several clicks to jump between subjects. SOOOOO here are my questions:
Can Adsense handle a multi-subject site?
Where is Adsense getting the information to select the ad if it is not from the content?

I would appreciate any advice on how to help Adsense select better ads.

Some other facts”
*I have had Adsense on the site almost 2 months and there has been little improvement in ad quality.
*I am using ColdFusion and a MySQL database to create the page with the ads.
*My traffic is negligible at this point but am getting lots of visits from spiders so I hope to be indexed in the next month or so.

When I've put up new pages I find the ads are based off of the file & directory name even if that's not relevant to the content. Then a day or two later it becomes more contextual but 2 weeks should be plenty.

I had a similar situation to your electrical/concrete thing and solved it by filling my meta tags with the word I wanted to focus on. If you can also change your url to something like electrical/electric.html you might be able to sway a few ads your way.

Lagamorph,

Which meta tags did you use?

Lagamorph,
Thanks for the advice, I will run some tests tonight with more description built into the URL.

I have a page on one site with very little text on it; mainly pictures of a vintage musical instrument collection. I decided to try adsense on it tonight; once I put the types of words I wanted into the Title and Description tags, I was getting VERY relevant ads almost immediately.
