Banned because of Adult content

I have a couple of sites that have just been banned by adsense because of "adult content", and yet these sites are only concerned with products for the house and garden.

I've been unable to find anything even mildly porongraphic and my emails to google/adsense remain unanswered.

Any one else had a similar problem or solution?

You are looking for the wrong thing, they said adult.

I don't have this experience, and furthermore I'm just an advertiser and not yet a publisher. But I can give you some ideas of things to do aside from twiddling your thumbs impatiently.

1-Go to google, set your preferences to "no filtering" and do a search for Satan.

Now set your preferences to "strict" and do the same search. See anything different? This is the adult thing.

Now enter keywords relevant for your page and see if ads are displayed or not.

2- Now this is what I'd do, if I were in your shoes: Go to the google weblog [google.blogspace.com], and look for the "Try Before You Sell" section. Enter your url's and preview what ads AdSense would likely show.

If it's charity stuff, either you're uncrawled or you have problems. If it shows relevant ads, then wait for the adsense team to contact you.

I'm remembering a Calvin and Hobbes strip where the two main characters are lying on the floor looking at the movies section of the newspaper. "Adult situations," Calvin reads, and wonders what they are, that children aren't allowed to see the movie.
"Oh," says Hobbes, "It's things like paying bills, being responsible, and that kind of thing."
Calvin agrees, and says it's a darn good thing they've got a rating system to keep unsuspecting kids from being exposed to that rubbish.
A poor paraphrase, but I thought it was hilarious when I was old enough to get it.

But I'm not seeing a connection between gardening and unsuitable for children. *shrug* Think synonyms, maybe?

Any racy flower names? I know sometimes the namers try and get really creative, though it's a stretch to think they'd come up with something that would get you banned...

Here's one thought: do a Google site search with and without filtering for a word that appears on every page in your site. If you find a difference in the results, check the missing pages for content that Google might misinterpret as adult.

There is a type of willow..... Also words like plow, dig or plant your seed could be taken in other ways...

I took the advice of martinibuster and ran the site thru a purity test and it does look like the searchsafe algo is kicking it out - although I've still been able to find any specific pages that could be consider "Adult" unless one uses the "Calvin & Hobbs" system!

Would be nice to hear from Google on this one.

I think your problem goes to show the weaknesses of Google's relying too heavily on algorithms in matters that require human intelligence (and not just any human's intelligence, but the intelligence of a human with experience and good judgment).

Accepting or rejecting applicants, detecting fraud, and identifying "adult" content are three examples of processes that require human intervention if only to avoid errors.

Of course, humans aren't perfect, either. Anyone who's ever studied the MPAA's movie ratings might conclude that the ratings wouldn't be any less accurate if they were determined by computer. :-)

Here's what Google says [google.com],

If you find sites that contain offensive content in your results, even with SafeSearch activated, please send an email with the site's URL to [e-mail] and we will investigate it.

If your website appears to be filtered by SafeSearch and you do not believe that it should be, please write to the same address as well.

I would suggest you try to diagnose this yourself first:
Run the Sim Spider [searchengineworld.com] through your site and look at the words. Look for anything that can be misconstrued.

Also, keep this in mind:

Google's filter... checks keywords and phrases, URLs and Open Directory categories.

Well I did get a reply back from Google and they where very specific about a couple of videos that I had for sale. They're advertised on regular TV, but I can see Google's point of view about them being adult content.

Just out of curiosity, did the titles of the videos contain a word like "s*x"? Something must have triggered that "adult content" detector.

not in the blurb and the photos where "pg".
The videos they didn't like were "girls gone wild" and "backyard babes". So nothing in the text was adult but I can see that the "theme" of the page could be considered adult.

A house and garden site... Well, at a streeeeeeeetch, backyard babes could be about those little stone statues people erect in their backyards..

but im still perplexed how "girls gone wild" can be part of a house and garden site, apart from maybe describing a spinster's working bee weekend weeding and cleaning up the wilds of the backyard so they can plant some fruit, flowers and vegetables.

Well I thought that "girls gone wild" was an instructional video about house cleaning. Or it could have been that dubious datafeed had been added to the database.
