Does it make a difference where exactly the section targeting tags go in the html

1. does it matter if they are in the header or not?

2. can ad_section target cross <div> boundaries? can you have:

<div id="xx">
<!-- google_ad_section_start(weight=ignore) -->
(stuff)
</div>
(stuff)
<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

Does the mediabot parse the html to analyze logical sections, just read the html as text?

3. Does not-visible html - like alt and title tags - get taken into account?

1. Google says not to put them in the header.

2. Don't know but if you are concerned you could create two separate sections.

3. Probably. But title tags are in header content so you can't stop mediabot from using them.

thanks I'll leave them out of the header -

3) actually I meant the title attribute in the <a> tag and the alt attribute in the <img> tag, both in the body section.

As some sections of my site are primarliy pages with images, I can attest to the fact that the <img> "alt" attribute is indeed considered for content.

I'm not familiar with the <a> tag "title" attribute. Might you be referring to "name"?

1. Google says not to put them in the header.

You wouldn't happen to have the google page where it says that? That would be helpful.

We have a few pages with multiple section targeting (e.g. in the header itself PLUS in the main body for the articles). It seems to work really well, but if it's not allowed I need to remove it.

If they are SUGGESTING rather than telling, I need to know.

rbacal-

1. Google says not to put them in the header.

I have seen this comment made a number of times before and I even think I may have read an ASA post saying this, however, I have never been able to find any reference in the policies or the help system about not using targeting outside of the body.

I seem to remember reading on some blog a snippet from a Google email on this subject. I didn't recall the precise wording, but the gist was something like "Section targeting is intended for use between the <body> tags." It didn't sound like an outright prohibition to me.

I brought this up awhile back [webmasterworld.com...] when I had questions about putting the section targeting inside of the meta keywords tag since ideally that is what best reflects the page content. I did contact adsense support about this particular issue since it did make sense to me, but wanted to double check with them so that I would not be violating the TOS. Here is a snippet of the email (I'm not sure if it will get cut out because its a snippet of email or will be left in my post because of how relevant it is to this topic).
The section targeting implementation you've suggested would not be compliant with our program policies. AdSense participants are not allowed to modify the behavior, targeting, or delivery of ads for any reason.
Please also keep in mind that our system does not target metatags. As previously mentioned, we encourage you to include more text-based sentences and paragraphs on your pages to improve your ad relevancy.

If it does get edited, the email basically said no, it would be against the TOS. And then later on in the email, it mentioned that they would pass along my idea about being able to change the color options for the search box to something besides black, white and grey.
Hope this helps.
