Odd Adsense Targeting Behaviod

It continues...

Like many of you have reported, I am also seeing a daily mix of odd targeting from AdSense. Pages seem to have great targeting, then PSAs for a bit, and then bad targeting, and then back to good targeting. Some pages seem totally unaffected, and always have good targeting, others have gotten 'stuck' with bad targeting that never changes (including ads that don't match any keywords on the page), and others fluctuate randomly (good, poor, PSAs) by hour or day.

In addition, I am also seeing a lot of poorly geo-targeted ads. I am in California - yet frequently see 4 out of 4 ads that show up for services based in Jacksonville, FL or Chicago, IL. Some pages have correctly geo-targeted ads, but most are way off. Any ideas on what is causing this?

And, I am seeing a lot of occurences where ads are poorly targeted or PSAs on my initial visit, but if I refresh, I get correctly targeted ads. Is this just because I have cached old ads, or do visitors (including first time visitors) experience this same problem?

In any regards, I am still seeing swings of 50% or more in daily ECPMs (even as ECPCs stay pretty constant), which I chalk up to the comings and goings of the correctly targeted ads.

I do hope that the Google team is able to get this fixed. There is nothing more frustrating than seeing pages that are nice revenue earners (and in some cases have been for months), suddenly loose their targeting for days at a time.

I have some of the same. Are the pages in question either high revenue earners or highly optmized, or both?

I'm seeing exactly this, that is, some pages, out of nowhere, sporadically show way off targetted ads. This is sort of a new phenomenon, possible just a one week old. I've been using adsense since early July.

And yes, I also had a few days of double EPC during last week, now things are back to normal.

The pages are about specific topics, but I would not say they are overly optimized. Just basic page design as described in the Google FAQ.

As for high revenue earners, I guess that is all relative, but yes, for me, some of the pages are amongst the higher earning pages I have (at least based on the limited number I am able to track via channels), but I would say there is no real pattern there, as lower earners and new pages are equally affected.

What is really odd is that new pages that I add often receive accurately targeted ads within a few hours, but later these drop off and may take days or longer to resume, generally showing a mix of PSAs and untargeted ads on a seemingly random basis.

Any thoughts on what could be causing the odd geo-targeting? Or is this all one related problem w/ Adsense's targeting?

Here's a question. For those of you seeing problems similar to this, which ad format are you running? I am running leaderboards on some of my sites, and wide skyscrapers on others. I just noticed while doing some more checking that there was not a single page that is using wide skys that is showing PSAs or mistargeted ads. Not a one!

However, my sites using Leaderboards are showing quite a few, including mistargeted ads, and many pages that show a PSA first, but upon a refresh show an ad (and in some cases, with further refreshes, fluctuate between PSAs and targeted ads - which is also odd). I checked EuropeForVisitors site as well, and noticed this exact same thing, since I recalled he was using leaderboards also.

It seems possible that this problem is only affecting leaderboards? Or at the least, is not affecting wide skys, put perhaps other formats including leaderboards?

This started happening to me today for a standard 486x60 style setup. Until today, this page always had nicely targeted ads displaying. My revenue today has fallen sharply.

Ok, so, on one of my placements where I have been seeing constantly mistargeted ads using leaderboards, I switched to a 468x60 placement. Immediately upon refresh, targeted ads appear. Going to do some more testing, but it seems that this targeting and PSA issue might be related to the ad format that we are using.

More frequent psas shown here, but I have also noticed a new design on the wide leaderboards, now the 4 ads seem to have no vertical dividing lines seperating them. Perhaps the adsense team have been tweaking with the design of this format.
