Hi,
I finally realized the target of some ads.
My name is Rashid and it appears in the bottom of every page on my site. On some pages adsense picks up on this and delivers islamic and Arabic related ads. I am not a Muslim or an Arab.
I think this hints of a new algo they are using were they relate kw b to kw a, if they appears together often on the web, even if there is no mention of kw b.

Does the word "Rashid" mean something in Arabic? I doubt content matching is so broad that they will match words that aren't even mentioned in the ad, or that Google are targeting ads based on the ethnic origin of names found on the page.

As a followup to your stickymail, I took a look at what I'm pretty sure is your site and the lowest-level pages have pretty good targeting. But the menu levels are such a mixed bag of topics that the ads being shown are terrible, and I don't really see how AdSense could do any better.

Sometimes in this situation AdSense will fall back on an overall site theme, and maybe the presence of "Arabic" and a few related words is what is triggering the ads. Maybe this is where "rashid" fits in as well. The problem is, and don't take this the wrong way, but your site isn't really about anything.

Hi jomaxx,
Thanks for taking the time to investigate. I see what you mean. The point I am making is from a human point of view if the word Rashid triggers an ad about used cars in Kuwait, on apage not mentionig Kuwait or cars is Stereotypng. The algo does a good job overall but has disasterouse results at times.

Oh yes, a1call there are whole threads on strange, humorous, embarrassing, crude, political, etc ad matching flubs by AdSense. I have had no choice but to change certain targeting anomalies in some pages.

The key here is that they are anomalies. They are not intentional bad mannered matches with some sub motive other than to match an ad to a page to get a click.

You will probably have to change a few words and move on. IMHO. Good luck with your site.

Hi Jon_King,
I know they are not intentional. I am not even offended or blame anyone or thing. I started the tread just to make a point of effects the relating kws algo has.
Also I am a bit frustrated at one ad in particular.
I could not filter it out because the url was longer than 64 characters. The adsense filter does not alow this, but apparently adwords does. So I had to remove the code from the page just to get rid of the annoying ad.

I see your problem. I am suggesting you experiment and find the on-page word or words that trigger the unwanted ads and change them.

In filtering just type in the domain without the WWW and the whole domain is filtered out. For example put in widgets.com not www.widgets.com

Google understands that the name of the maker is irrelevant to visitors of the site and shouldn't be there :-)

ster·e·o·type
n.

1. A conventional, formulaic, and oversimplified conception, opinion, or image.
2. One that is regarded as embodying or conforming to a set image or type.

>>By definition the whole of any SE's algo's would seem to be stereotyping!

What I can't understand is why Adsense can't detect that the ads it serves related to the word Rashid are getting a comparatively low CTR. The algo can then auto-correct the targeting to ads that are getting higher CTR. Or is this too difficult? :(
