Many of the posts about Adsense earnings dropping appear to often blame some action taken by Google. It seems to me that there are a number of reasons Adsense earning will vary (both up and down) on a specific site, including, but not limit to, the following:

* Existing Adword advertiser meeting budget for the month and dropping out until next month.
* Existing Adword advertiser adjusting their CPC (up or down).
* Existing Adword advertiser dropping “content” sites from their campaigns.
* Appropriate targeted ad inventory become depleted triggering more PSAs.
* New advertiser joins Adword program.
* Your users profile and demographics change.
* Your website topic is of seasonal interest.
* You add or delete content.
* You change the Adsense ad format, color, etc.
* Your page views increase or decrease due to good/bad promotion, PR, linking, search engine position, etc.
* Google changes the programs payout formula.
* Google changes the targeting algorithm.
* Ad apathy sets in with your site users.

I’m sure there are other reasons. Feel free to add to the list.

Wow...thank you for putting it so cut and dry...if we could keep your list front and center it would sure cut down on "why are my earnings so low" questions :)

Thanks!

I guess it's incorporated in your list but someone posted a message in these forms once suggesting that earnings variations might be a result of some short term bidding war on a keyword.

They described how in just a few days the high bid might go from say X to 4X or so, just so a person could command that keyword. Evidently after some advertisers have blown through their available money the bidding returns to a more normal level. Makes sense to me.

Two more to add:
1. Adsense ads are rotating, not static
2. CPC for these ads under the same topic can vary up to 1000% (example: 10 cents from bottom ad to a top ad of $1.00)

Is AdSense crazy? Not whining or anything... it's just that my EPC jumped 46% today. I just couldn't understand why...

We are on the same boat...ARGGHH... CTR down 15% whereas EPC skyrocketed 46%. I doubt this will last long given Adsense long history of secret algo experiement.

Today so far EPC up, CTR down, net result about the same revenue here.
