should I be afraid of adsense abuse?

if someone disliked us, could they click a few hundred times and have google cancel our account?

I'm so paranoid after everything I've read, I seriously hope they take this kind of thing into consideration..

I think you will find that the larger the site you are the less likely this will be a problem....

If you are only getting say 2000 impressions and you suddenly see a spike in click throughs then it is time to worry.....

I used to worry about it but life is just too short... We could worry about the leaves falling from the trees...

After you have been on Adsense for some time and you have built up a respectable history of stats then I too think that this will stand you in good stead. Even consider writing to Adsense team and telling them your worries. They are human (Sometimes)

When my stats freeze which they often do after I have a record day I think.... Hmmm I bet they are holding back to have a closer look.

Just keep adding content, build, build, build

we get 6,000~ unique hits a day/ 40,000 pageviews a day.

I don't know what that'll translate to for adsense, as I just signed up.

the thing is, it looks like adsense may be enough for us to move to our own server... but if I move the site, and get kicked off adsense, I think I'll be in a bit of trouble as far as hosting goes.

Your specific experience on Adsense will be different than others, but assuming you have reasonably content on a good subject, with the volume you are getting you should do well.

Definitely use channels. I was running adsense on all my pages and after using channels, I was able to eliminate 60% of the pages that were performing poorly. The results were impressive since it seems the 60% that were performing poorly were putting a drain on relevance (no really, I mean it). I know the ctr would naturally rise since I reduced impressions, but there was a dramatic rise in actual clicks.

How do I quote =/

I want to quote powdork properly, what are the tags?

"I know the ctr would naturally rise since I reduced impressions, but there was a dramatic rise in actual clicks."

I reduced the badly performing ads and CTR shot up as you would expect, but didn't look for a rise in clicks, (there was no rise in revenue, but could have been an off few days) so will try again =)

what I'm worried about isn't my natural CTR, what I'm worried about is what if someone that disliked us wanted to send out a "red flag" by clicking hundreds or thousands of times, hoping to get us kicked off?

What if someone disliked your real world store and smashed in your windows?

What if someone hacked your website?

What if someone were to spread a bunch of false rumors about your business that made it/you look bad?

COME ON! You can't sit here worrying about whether people are going to click on friggin AdSense ads. I see so many people ask this question, it's insane. Do you really think anyone has the time for that? Don't you think Google would (for the most part) be able to tell it's not you anyway? Who cares?

There are risks associated with doing business. Heck, there are risks associated with walking down the street, but you suck it up and move on. Questions like this annoy the crap out of me. Tecnically, yes, someone can sit there all day and click your AdSense advertisements.

And if they do ... WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO DO ABOUT IT? I mean seriously, ask yourself that. Sitting around worrying about it isn't going to help anything, just have a plan in the back of your mind as to what you're going to do if it DOES happen and then don't give it another minute of thought.

I know what I would do if any of my 3 opening scenarios happened to me. It could happen any moment of any day. If I keep making posts like this, it will probably happen sooner rather than later :P

But I don't sit around worrying about it.

it's very relevant to us, though.

we run a non-profit site, we're just looking to recoup the costs of hosting- and hopefully expand our coverage.

with the revenue adsense is making, we can move to a dedicated host. but if I move there, and adsense pulls the plug, I'm really screwed.

I'm sorry if this question annoys you, but it's something that may influence a lot of decisions on our end

Oh, ok then it is fine.

Since it is not relevant to everyone else whom is a for-profit.

If you are going to worry, do not do it.
Or, how about NOT moving to a dedicated server.

Problem solved.

I don't see why you're insisting on being so malicious and insulting.

I'm asking a pretty simple question: is the "red flag" that google gets a result of click-surges, or is it more targetted than that? hypothetically, if something like this (someone trying to get you kicked out) were to happen, is that what google goes on?

I've never heard of this happening, I have Adsense on numerous sites with shed loads of competition and its never happened.

Also the Adsense team are not dullards and it is my believe that they will know if you click on your own ads simply by matching IP's or by tracking you via the toolbar if you have it, also multiple clicks from the same IP or by automated clicking scripts should also raise the red flag but probably not against your site.

My advice is to try it, worst case scenario is that if in the unlikely event you get dropped after you upgrade your host you move back to a cheaper host but IMHO this should never happen if you don't try to cheat adsense.

thank you symbios.

if this isn't it, though, what on earth is causing all of these "innocent" sites to be kicked out of the program?

I remember this one kid back in high school who used to write his name on EVERYTHING - I mean even his freakin Gym shorts - because he was so paranoid that someone was going to steal from him. Turns out the kid was a thief. It's not that uncommon about thieves or those with the thief mindset - they're always afraid someone is going to steal their stuff.

I've used AdWords before and until I came to WebMasterWorld I never ONCE thought "What if someone else spends all day clicking my AdWords ads and costing me money". But I see people ask that question all the freaking time here. It just doesn't happen because no one CARES enough to do it. It makes me wonder if my above true-story example applies here.

To the original poster ... which one are you? Are you the type of person who would do that to someone else? Or are you the type of person who would click your own AdSense ads? Are you asking this question so you can FIGURE OUT how it's tracked so you can come up with a way to click your own ads and not get caught?

Ever notice the only people you hear about getting banned from AdSense are the people who at one point or another ASKED THE SAME QUESTION YOU DID?

LOL... it's not all that far out of reality... In another message, someone wrote about a kid they knew in school who alwas wrote his name on everything... thinking back to when I was a kid, I once got called into the vice principal's office and got several "hacks" (back in the days of corporal punishment, they still actually used a wooden paddle to smack the crap out of your fanny) for writing my name, all over the pull down window shades in my classroom...

Never mind that I didn't do it, someone else had "done me"..

Parnoia is not really all that abnormal, nor, is it unrealistic.

In the Online world, there are some real characters, on both sides of the fence.. some have WAY too much time on their hands and are absolutely ferocious in how they deal with people.. when online that is... face to face, they are usually cowards.. Annonymity grows courage like you would not believe!

As for getting a dedicated, I might suggest ev1servers.net, they are VERY reasonable (like in the $100-$120 range <hope that I did not just violate forum rules by passing on that info!> )

That should be fairly easy to manage...

I worry somewhat about someone producing fraudulent clicks on my site and getting me in trouble with AdSense. I deal with advertisers that I would have suspicions about if I ever dropped them and replaced their advertising with AdSense.

While I don't know the specifics about the nature of what type of attacks I might be subject to, I have all of the different topics on my site categorized under different Channels. If I ever saw any spike in the CTR on one of these Channels I think I would pull the AdSense ads off it for a while, so to give me time to contact AdSense and/or come up with a plan.
