Variables in alternate ads?

I would like to send a variable to my alternate ad, without violating the TOS. For example:

[domain.com...]

the HTTP_REFERER would be the referring page (the page visited right before the pag showing the alternate ad was visited).

Has anyone figured out a way to do this?

I just stuck a tracking code on the alt ad page itself. Whenever that page is called, it shows the referrer.

Tried that, but it won't work...

$HTTP_REFERER within the PHP code that outputs the alternate ad code has the page that called the alt ad script (current page), not the page before.
