Adsense and "open new window"

what defines a "popup"

A question for the Adsense experts: I have numerous pages on my site that are basically a "click to enlarge" photo link. When clicked, via javascript window open, they open in a new window. The pages contain the enlarged image, links to the rest of the pages on the site, copyright info, links to next and back for other images within the particular "gallery" and, a caption for the photo..

I got to thinking after placing the code on a few of them and asked the Adsens support team and they said they were not allowed as they considered them "popups"..

I removed the code but disagree, since they are valid linked pages, have content, not specifically for showing ads, had been crawled by the media partner bot and had VERY relevant ad content showing..

Anyone have similar experience? I'd post a link to an example but I know this is against the TOS here..

Thanks in advance

When I applied for ADSense the first time they turned down my request for the reason that some links open new windows. After I removed the code to open new windows and reapplied they approved my site.

Yea, I'm actually sorry I asked them! I doubt it's truly against their policy, if you read it very carefully that is..

I just ran across a site that has their adsense clicks opening in new windows, CLEARLY a violation yet, because they did not ask, they are getting away with it.

I'm doing fairly well anyway, it's just pretty limiting because I have 100's of pages that are linked in that way.. *sigh*

From your description the only thing I am wondering is if there is too much content in those windows. Image: OK, copyright: OK, links to the "next" and "previous" images: OK, links to the rest of the pages on the site: HUH? Why do you have that?

I would have thought that simply showing a detailed image in a popup window would not be a violation of any kind. But I am definitely not going to ask Google that question in the context of any of my sites. Let sleeping dogs lie.

Not to *all* the pages on the site, just the standard linkset that graces the bottom or top of all the pages on the site. I'd run into pages from other sites via search engines that were of this sort and you really have no idea where the rest of the site is, or you have to got o the URL window, chop off a bunch to get to, say the home page.

I truly wish I'd have let the sleeping dogs lie!

Whomever is responding to my emails is saying they are in violation but, I read and re-read (wish I'd have done that before I asked) and I just can't see how they are in violation.

It's not opening the Adsense linked content in a new window, it's opening my OWN site's content in a new window... Something that I don't think they disallow.

Oh well, I've sent examples, I don't know if they actually take the time to look, or just say they do, and say NO... figuring that to err on the side of their side is better than letting it go if it were, indeed, in violation..

*sigh*

I'll probably keep dickering with them on it.. It is, after all more chances to get quality ads... One page had a stick of Beemans Pepsin gum that a race crew had stuck on the panel of their airplane (a'la Right Stuff) and by darn if the ad running wasn't for Vintage Beemans Pepsin Gum! That crew spent WEEKS tracking the stuff down and, here we were showing the world that product....

And they made me remove it... grrrr.. ;)

I didn't succeed in saying it, but what I was getting at was that Google probably don't want sites that open up a separate window with fully functional navigation, because it could be a way of getting paid for AdSense clicks while holding on to the visitor. They want their advertisers to get the whole visitor (insofar as is possible), not just one window.

Anyway that's the only reason I can think of that they would make an issue out of it.

You're probably absolutely correct. The only way round it that I could see would be to just change the call from a javascript open window to a simple link.

I'd have to change a lot of links but, the pages are PHP generated, so that part of it wouldn't be all that hard..

Anyway, I'm still doin fine and actually LOVE Adsense in that it's bringing in some funding to the site... which we all need!

PS.. I forgot to add, since this is my first postings here... THANK YOU to the people who own and frequent this site! It is a GREAT resource.. as soon as I can afford it, I'll have to subscribe to help keep it going!
