Norton anti-virus blocking AdSense?

Saw this on another forum

I saw a post on an affiliate forum saying that Norton Anti-Virus blocks ads, including AdSense (and Commission Junction, double-click, and much more).

Is this true? This could be a big profit loss because they have millions of users.

Can anybody else corroborate this?

i am not aware of norton but i do know Zone Alarm firewall blocks all ads which have banners from Commission Junction.

Yes, first seen here back in October. Their ad blocking feature is set by default to on, and most people aren't even realizing it is enabled.

I saw it on a friend's computer a few nights ago. She thought there was something wrong with my pages, and didn't know about the adblocker until I showed it to her.

Links from CJ, Linkshare, BeFree, and Performics were all taken out, both banners and text links. They were completely gone from the source code, not just covered over or something. Links from independent merchants and smaller affiliate networks were not affected. I'm sure it's only a matter of time until they are too. Grrrrr ....

In Adwords, oddly, some link titles were gone and some were still there, in the same ad panel. I wasn't able to discern what made the difference.

The ads that have the Adword conversion tracking are the ones that seem to be fine, while the non-tracked ones are blocked. The conversion tracking URLs were too new for it to be added to the 2004 Norton, I believe.

Great, how unfortunate.

I saw an interesting idea on another forum.

Someone there claimed that they are putting a background image ad for McAfee Anti-virus, underneath all their commission based ads.

If Norton blocks their commission based ads, the visitor sees a clickable banner ad that takes them to Norton's main competitor.

It's not Norton Anti-Virus that blocks the ads... it's their "Norton Internet Security" package.

Just trying to be sure we're talking about the right thing.

There are at least three Norton products that block ads - Norton Internet Security, Norton AntiSpam, and Norton Personal Firewall. Internet Security is bundled with their AntiVirus program, which is where the confusion is from.

I have Norton Internet Security on one computer and indeed it blocks Adsense. It also blocks doubleclick, CJ, fastclick, Burstmedia, Yahoo ads, and a lot of other banners...
