If you're happy and you know it, then you're clicks will surely show it!
If you're happy and you know it click my ads!

So I was singing that tune to myself a little while ago while checking my stats and wondered...

How important do you feel a positive user experience contributes to CTR?

Sounds very important to me! If your content brings the visitor in the right mood to know more about a subject or to buy a widget related to your niche, your CTR will double easily!

(BTW, I wouldn't display those lyrics on my site;-))

ever since i stopped throwing ad's all over my website in hopes of people seeing them and clicking them, i have gotten way more clicks/earnings.

i only have 1 ad block per page, and its working wonders

I have two free download links and two links to view thumbnails of the free art above each one on each page. Smack in the middle of the links is a large rectancle, the downloads take two minutes each (broadband), there are 12 pages with 24 different downloads.

Gee wonder what I'm going to do while the zips download? Can you say, "Captive Audience", and they are getting free high end professional stuff which makes them totally happy campers.

It would be really hard to measure, but it would seem that the user might have less resentment about ads if they enjoy the site.

I too have found I get a better click through rate with just one ad unit per page.

The other thing influencing clicks would be how well the ads lead to something our visitors find useful. That is why it's worth filtering out bad ads.

Which brings me to another happy thought. I am not finding MFAs and Scammy site ads lately. Could it be that Google is getting a handle on the problem?

I think it may be important to conversions and actual sales but to CTR I'm inclined to believe it works the other way. I find my pages with good complete info have much worse CTR than my pages that are brief. I've read a number of threads here that seem to feel the same thing.

Also fear is a major tool in advertising, from buy this or die to the more subtle hurry before we won't sell you one at this price. I'd guess the anxious user is more likely to click than a contented one.

That said the positive user experience has long term effects that should outweigh the "unhappy" clicks.

I've had the opposite experience. Mind you, my readers are researching ways to spend their money, so it stands to reason that readers who have been "presold" (i.e., who have read an in-depth review or destination article) are more likely to click through and convert for the advertiser than are people who are reading a photo caption or getting a snippet of information.

Sorry Martini, you started this...

If you're happy and you know it click fraud really shows it,
If you're happy and you know it ban my site!

Then the follow up poem:

I'm as happy as I can be,
A happier AdSenser you'll never see!
Suspended for invalid clicks?
I think I'll go and slash my wrist...

martinibuster,

I don't use adsense so can't comment ... but I have to tell you that yours has to win the WebmasterWorld "best title award" if there is such a thing!

Funny as hell and just brilliant! :)

Tried many different placements but finally decided on large rectangle at the top, medium banner in between first para & rest of the content and ad links on the right column... so that's 3 units and my CTR is very nice...

I guess it helps that I try to keep my site as focussed on-topic as possible.

oh and by the way... i can't resist it...

You put your Adsense in,
You pull your Adsense out,
You put your Adsense in,
Then you move them all about,
You get a lot of money,
And spend it all around...
That's what it's all about!

I consider my low CRT as a compliment and that my visitors find all they need to find on my pages that the need to click on ads is lower. I make it up with mammoth traffic so it all works out in the end.

If you're happy and you know it avoid my ads

If you're happy and you know it avoid my ads ...

... and tell hundreds of your friends about my website :)

Exactly, that's how it's supposed to work. Quality will always win the long term battle.

Mine have dropped a bit too, annej, so let's hope it's a good trend!

How important do you feel a positive user experience contributes to CTR?

Believe it or not, I see both trends. Users who enjoy the content, are captivated by it and have no reason to click ads. However, some users find such good information, the ads are intriguing and they click in search for more good stuff.

I've spent hours trying to think like the user, gauging a wide range of emotions after being presented with a certain types of content.

I worked "Customer Service" for years and the first rule of thumb for me was to "make sure the customer leaves with a smile on their face" and they'll always come back.

Bull's eye sven1977,
The total number that add my site to favorites everyday is way higher than my total daily AdSense clicks, long term, that's a winning formula (at least for me).
