I just signed up to adsense so I'm quite new to it and I placed the code on the homepage of a photography site. However the only ad that displays is a hurricane relief advert that clearly has nothing to do with the theme of the site and looks awful anyway.
Is there something wrong with the code, or could it do with on-page factors?

Thats normal. You'll get relevant ads after Google had fully spidered your pages.
Read the welcome email from Adsense, you will read it there.
