Have you done this?

I was wondering how others feel about putting AdSense ads on Ecommerce sites. Say you sell green widgets, therefore your competitors sell green widgets as well and are then advertising on your site.

I have done this on my largest ecommerce sites and indeed my main competitors are showing ads on my sites. If I blocked all of them, there would be no ads of interest for my visitors to click on, so I have only blocked those spammy sites that are claiming to give you laptop computers for completing an endless number of offers.

I was just wondering how many others felt they were making more money placing ads on their ecommerce site than possible sales lost to their competitors?

My sales are still about average as for what I sell, so I feel that having added AdSense has been a pure bonus.

It's what so many of us do. You sell green widgets. But if your visitor doesn't like your green widgets you give them the opportunity to buy the green widgets of someone else. And on their way leaving your website you make some cash from an Adsense click. That's the beauty of combining (affiliate) sales pages with Adsense!

Hopefully you have a niche product and the ads show for the broad category. This way you have an effective way to monetize your ecommerce site without losing customers to direct competition. This is what I do.
