I noticed a site with a bunch of links below an article that looked nothing like Adsense but was labelled as Adsense. And they were. But when I looked at the code it looked like heavily modified Adsense code. I mean really heavily modded code and that site is very popular so how do they get away with it?

My impression is that mega-sites have special arragements with Google (i.e.: "Premium Publishers") and are allowed to do lots of additional things with AdSense code that we mere mortals are not.

yeah, premium publishers may edit the look of their code after talk with google, and most of them also do it...
