Loading time of ads

Which factors influence the loading time of the ads?
Is there anything I could do to make them load faster or so?

Because sometimes they load very fast, but very often I have the feeling it's just too slow. If ads are loaded after the content of the site, people will first read through the content instead seeing the ads.

dont put them in tables cells.. thats the only thing i figured out. i also try not to put them in seperate divs (usually place them inline with other things)
