What's wrong with domain paths?

Google wrote me this:

<paraphrase by mod>

At this time, the Google AdSense program does not support domain paths. Your site
[example.com...] redirects to
[home.freeispcompany.net...] which is considered a domain path. You
must be able to run ads on your entire site, not just specific parts of it. We may offer this option to publishers in the future.

But I don't understand. I *can* run ads on my entire site, or could if I wanted to. Why does it matter that www.example.com redirects to home.freeispcompany.net/~name?

[edit reason] URLs examplified & no email quotes please, as per TOS; [/edit]

They make the rules...but you are running Adsense, so I guess they didn't refuse?

ps - urls in messages is against WW's TOS, again they make the rules. ;)

Sorry! I didn't realize I should take out the URLs.

Well, Google told me to take off the ads and email them again. I wrote them asking about their note, because I thought maybe they misunderstood what I was doing. (They did say the page "*may* be unacceptable," which suggests uncertainty.) Anyway, they haven't answered yet. But I'd like to know why--apart from "they make the rules"--this would be perceived as a negative by them. Why would it possibly matter if a page is redirecting to my site? (This must be the case with a large percentage of sites on the web, I should think.)

Taken from google polices page
In general, we do not accept personal pages or chat sites into the AdSense program

Your domain name redirects to free hosting which is seen as personal pages.

Not if they want to have adsense on their site

[home.freeispcompany.net...] Since you don't own freeispcompany.net, you are not legally able to act for them and approve AdSense. Someone recently ran into this with a Geocities site, and they were told to remove AdSense unless they could show that they owned Geocities/Yahoo ;) You can only place AdSense on domains for which you are legally authorized to do so by the domain holder, or which you own.

Second, perhaps the ~ in the domain path also is problematic.

The solution is to get some hosting, throw up your pages from freeispcompany.net onto your own domain name (without any redirects to your content on other sites). There are very few publishers who are unable to at least cover their monthly hosting bill with AdSense, and many who are earning significantly more.

Okay, so by "entire site" they mean everything owned by "freeispcompany.net," which is to say Earthlink? But Earthlink actually told me specifically that it was okay with them if I ran google ads on my site.

Thanks for the help. Still no response from Google.

Unfortunately its Google that needs to say its ok, not just Earthlink!

Best bet is to go out and buy yourself a domain, and get it hosted away from these free ISP sites etc & start building.

Just out of interest does your free hosting pages already have banner advertising somewhere on your pages?

You can get a domain name for $30.00 or less a year, and there are hosting services for as low as about $6.00 US dollars a month. So as long as you can make more than $106 a year, you are ahead. Not to be confused with a head of the ‘70’s. ;-))

Thanks for your help, everyone. I think at this point I'll just take the ads off. I doubt if I could generate enough revenue to make paying for external hosting pay off.

Just out of interest does your free hosting pages already have banner advertising somewhere on your pages?

No, I don't think there's any other advertising up at all. Why do you ask? I've been careful about this because I didn't want to offend Earthlink. (I was surprised they wouldn't mind Google ads.)

You can get solid hosting for $20/year.

But just in case I change my mind tomorrow, who offers solid hosting for $20 a year? That seems low.

There are plenty of sites offering cheap hosting. Check reviews elsewhere before you signup....!probably some good web hosting discussion forums! You can easily get 1 year Hosting with 100MB and lots of bandwidth...issue is quality and uptime. You would never wnat your website to be down....! So take due care while saving your money on this!
