I think there is some debate if these are allowed on the same page as Adsense. I've emailed Google and will post back the reply. It would be good if others who ask them the same question report back so that we get a general feel on where we stand with these.

The key is if the ad is really contextual. Does the ad come and scrape the page to determine content (like AdSense) or is the ad based on one or more keywords that you give the ad (which is not contextual, since you can give it keywords that are not the focus of the page)?

It's my understanding that they spider the page content if you use this banner - hence the need to clarify Google's position.

Well, got official clarification that because they are contextual, Amazon self optimising units currently in beta cannot be placed on the same page as adsense banners

By the way, you can opt out of getting these contextual Amazon Ads. On the "Recommended Products Links" set up page, there is a "contact us" link which you can use to request not to have the new kind of ads.
I thought something was up when I noticed the "recommended products" in these Amazon ad units were sometimes directly related to a product discussed on the page, more often than could have been coincidence.

When you use the related Amazon banners and you are entering in the keyword for the product . .
is this ok alongside of adsense?

Like Chitika, if you enter keywords and they select ads based on your keywords that seems OK. What they don't allow is where you paste code, the ad supplier spiders the page and selects ads based on spidering - I.E. contextual.
