Two questions: getting indexed and getting best CPC ads to show up

I'm sure you guys have covered some of this before, but help a brother out... I just started and I'm fascinated with the possibility of this. Just by handing my url out to a few people, I made $22 in a week, and my site isn't even indexed yet.

1) Someone in another thread mentioned your site can get indexed qucikly if you "link from a good PR site" What does this mean? My site has been up for a few weeks now and it does not appear in search engines, even if I type the URL name explicitly. I submitted to DMOZ etc, but what else can I do?

2) For my key phrases on my site, I seem to be getting lowered rated CPC ads - why is this? For example, when I type my words in the google tool, I see that people are paying $6-$9 dollars for the keywords that my site is about. Yet, with only 3 ads on my site, I seem to get the lower rated ones on the list - I'm not getting anywhere near $6 per click, or even $3 per click. I can see by typing a word in google, that many of the ads that show on my site are the ones toward the bottom of the list on the right page of a google search result. Any wisdom on this issue?

Thanks, this forum rocks, as usual.

You can't have your friends clicking on ads.

I think $22 in a week is a lotta money considering the fact that only a few friends clicked the ads (Am I right about that?). They must have been clicking all day long!

Wow, you're brave! I don't reveal my domain name to anybody I know for fear that they'll click on my ads repeatedly, I'll make $22 in a week, and then get booted from the AdSense program for invalid clicks.

your site can get indexed qucikly if you "link from a good PR site" What does this mean?

This means that some other page on the Internet that has a long green bar in the Google toolbar, as well as few outgoing links (the "gift" of PR is divided by the # of pages a page "gives" it to), contains a link to your website.

I see that people are paying $6-$9 dollars for the keywords that my site is about.

Many factors at work here:

  • Google doesn't actually give you live data on what people are actually paying per click, AFAIK. Use such tools to make relative judgements between two keywords, not to estimate what your website could make.
  • Many advertisers only advertise on Google search, not on the Google content network (that's you). One reason is that when some AdWords advertiser gets his best bud to bang away on some ads to make some extra money, the AdWords advertiser gets billed for clicks that result in total crap traffic -- people who have no intention of buying anything at all. So, it's easier to just click the box that tells Google not to put the ads on AdSense publisher websites.
  • SmartPricing means that Google is free to pay someone else $6/click and pay you $.06/click for the exact same ad. Their goal is to figure out whether the people you are sending to their advertisers are actually buying stuff and, if not, to pay you very little (they can even go lower than a penny per click!).

Whoa, why does everyone assume I handed it out to friends? I did not, for fear of that exact reason. And my click numbers are not high. It didn't take many clicks to hit $22... so it's not like friends are pounding away on the clicks. My site has a ton content and only 3 ads on a few pages, but they are very relevant ads.

Anyway... thanks for the info on the fact that some advertisers can avoid the partner program. Does anyone fear as the lawsuits mount that more and more advertisers will avoid this and only the bottom of the barrel will be available to adsense users?

Okay, I re-read my first post and I think "few" people was misinterpreted. We're probably talking 100+ - I had flyers at a couple local events one weekend - to me that is a "few" people compared to what is out there on the 'net. :) But no, I did not give my URL to Mom, Dad and Brother and tell them to click like crazy. Sorry for the misleading statement.

Sorry for misunderstanding you. Never did that, giving away flyers to people at large events. Good thinking, thanks;-)

I would be afraid to do that as well. Wouldn't want all my AdSense clicks coming from one relatively small locality. But I could be paranoid.

"some of the comments in this forum have made me paranoid.."

I've been watching this forum for some time and just started posting in the last two weeks. I've gotten so much great information from the experts here.

I do have to admit that I have also become a bit paranoid becuse I didn't know you could get into trouble for some things mentioned here.

Example: Someone posted that you should never check into your Adsense account from any other computer than the your own. I have been checking my account from my work computer several times a day for at least two years. Now I'm afraid to.
