I was looking at one of my pages, and instead of seeing the usual 3 or 4 text ads in the box, there was a single graphical banner ad.

After refreshing the page, it went away, and returned to 4 text ads.

Is this normal? I thought I had to specify if I wanted to display someone else's banner ad.

When you generate the AdSense code you can select if you will display text and/or image ads.

I thought I specified text ads. I've had adsense for about 2 months, and this is the 1st time I've seen an image ad. If I did specify text and/or image ads, wouldn't I see a lot more of them? Is this just a mistake by Google or is there something I don't understand?

Have yoy looked at your code to see what you specified?

Tony, you have to look at the AdSense control panel. Poke around. You'll find it.

Is it possible that you saw an "expanded" ad? If it was all text you could have been.

Ok. It does say "Text and Image Ads", so I guess that explains it, but after two months, I've only seen one image ad on my site. Is that normal?

Yes, ads are mostly text even if you choose text/image, although it may also depend on the topic.

Yes, ads are mostly text even if you choose text/image, although it may also depend on the topic.

Plus, you would have to have a high number of self-generated pageviews to see an image ad. I don't hit, "refresh" a hundred times on my pages, but every now and then I will see an image ad.

If 1000 visitors hit your site, a few of them may see images instead of text on one page or more.
