What's the ideal amount of ads?

Thinking about getting rid of ad blocks

I'm thinking about getting rid of some of my adblocks to increase my CTR. Currently I'm running 3 adblocks per page.

One 120x600 tower on the left under my navigation
One 468x60 banner right above my main text
And either a 250x250 or 120x240 in my text depending on which size fits best.

My question is how many ads is the ideal amount to have per page? Right now I run 8 ads on average - 4 in the tower, and 2 a piece in the remaining adblock.

I'm thinking of dropping the left-hand tower because it loads first and has the lowest CTR and eCPM, although not by much. My only concern is that I would be left with only four ads, cutting my total ad amount in half.

Do you think it would be wise to supplement the left-hand tower with another in-text adblock of 2 ads or should I leave it in hopes that my CTR will improve?

Thanks!

Thanks for the link.

But I was wondering if anyone had any advice regarding my specific situation, not just how the number of adblocks work in general.

Do I need to have more than 4 ads shown per page?

Every site is different. I have a couple of sites that have adsense on, and despite different approached the topic is the same. However, adsense behaviour is different.

I would suggest you put channels on each of the blocks (if you haven't already done so) and then once you have some data to use, delete one of the blocks and monitor what happens.

I don't think anyone can advise you as to what will happen on your individual site - that is the process of trial and error we all go through!

If it doesn't work, you can always revert to the older page at any time.

I have reduced ads quite a lot in the last few days, and it has not had much noticable impact positive or negative on earnings.
But as I see it, if you are relying on repeat vistors, then there is a long term benefit in fewer adverts!
If you scrape for every last short term dollar you may be neglectling the bigger picture.
