magazine style sites and AdSense

is it successful?

If a magazine type site includes 10 different categories (i.e., entertainment, sports, travel, family, etc.) geared toward a specific audience, and is updated monthly, would AdSense be a good advertising solution?

It seems like everything I've read regarding success with AdSense is to have all a site's pages centered around one specific topic. Yet, I've seen magazine-like sites which cover several topics using AdSense.

Any opinions?

AdSense targets ads to the content of the page, so it can easily put car ads on your automotive pages, travel ads on your travel pages, and so on.

There are two reasons why a general-interest site might not be ideal for Adsense, however:

1) When AdSense can't specifically target an ad to the content of a page, it won't be able to fall back on a more general theme ad as it might be able to do on a more focused site. (Example: On my European travel site, AdSense can usually come up with an ad for European tours, rail passes, or whatever if it can't match an ad to specific keywords on the page. That wouldn't be the case on a general-interest site.)

2) The audience for a general-interest site won't necessarily be interested in what advertisers have to sell. (Example: An ad for car accessories on a general-interest site's review of a car probably won't do as well as an ad for car accessories on an automotive site.)

Fortunately, Google doesn't require that you commit to using AdSense for a fixed length of time, so--if the ads don't work for you--you can simply remove the AdSense code from your pages and try something else.

Santrobi,

I pretty much agree with the above. I run a site almost exactly the same as you describe, though it is updated 24 hours. We find Adsense performs better than all our other network adverts except for targeted campaigns, which tend to have a high CPM.

Plus you can slot adsense in to spots in addition to your normal graphic banners...since user tend not to mind them so much.

Worth a try for sure.

If a magazine type site includes 10 different categories

I have 5 different main categories, but some of the main categories of my magazines are so wide, that several sub categories have place.

Works very good.
