New to AdSense

Well, I've read all the horror stories over the months here, but we went for it anyway yesterday with a popular hobby site we run (the kind of thing that AdSense was made for I'm sure).

Looking good so far - we put the AdSense ads below the fold deliberately (subtlety is good for us) matched up style to the site (hid the frame that surrounds the ads, I assume that's ok?) and last two days have provided between <snip> CTR.

Money looks OK too - good value keywords coming through it seems.

Have made sure we're not displaying ads on any pages which in the slightest could be said to be against the TOS - sticking to the strict content only rules. Hopefully nothing untoward will happen.

Main aim is to get this site to just pay for itself. $50 a month and we'd be very happy, but it looks so far as if it will be very much in excess of that.

Are you referring to the ad border? If so, that's OK. If you've modified the javascript code the AdSense site generates for you in any way, that is against the TOS.

Yes, just the (standard is blue) Ad border.

Just modified in the control panel only, then copied and pasted the code exactly as presented.

It looks good actually - quite pleased with the way it's integrated to the site.

Actually, I just had a thought - I do actually use this site myself a lot (has a busy forum) - could that lead to being acused of creating false impressions - or is it only false clicks that google are interested in?

I don't think Google will worry about you using the site, there are lots of legitimate reasons why a site owner would look at a site.

Forum moderating, site testing, reference for answering questions etc. etc.

It is only false clicks that will cause you a problem. I strictly avoid clicking on ads on our sites and have told all our people the same thing.

There's no way we'd click on our own ads - I've been reading posts in this forum since AdSense was launched and know the score.

But the mods and admins do hit the site a lot (probably 20 or 30 times a day).

If we end up having problems, I'll keep you posted.....

What they don't want is a publisher making fraudulent impressions (to make a fraudulently high CTR % lower). They don't care about the average publisher (or the publisher's admins/mods) visiting pages while going about daily business. I wouldn't worry about it, unless your own page views are a fairly significant percentage of the overall number of page views in your account.

Maybe 1-2% so not high. But I just realised all mods/admins are on static IP's - so I can actually stop the AdSense ads displaying to them per IP addy, which I think I'll do in order to play safe...

I just started Adsense too. I've got a brand-new site with not much content up yet, and almost no visitors. I've earned three cents so far. :)
But I like how it looks, I like how it's targeted (I don't really know how it figured out my site's theme, but I do like the theme it chose!), it seems pretty cool... Guess I should get the rest of my content up and start promoting the site, huh?

We did it anyway - it's easy to do by membership name we found - any of the admins that login do not get AdSense displayed.....

Well, I'm joining the fray also. Hope to make enough to offset some lost revenue over the past couple of years. Can't hurt to see how it works. And so far, so good, under an hour from submission to approval. Wish everything were that easy.

trillianjedi, just keep in mind that if you don't see your AdSense ads, you'll have no idea if you get mistargeted ads, or worse, PSAs. Sites that have had targeted ads for months with no problems (including mine), have had this happen. This could backfire on you.

Thanks Blue_Fin - we are aware of that, but can always just log in to the site as guests to get around that (part of the reason for logging by username rather than IP addy).

That's novel.

Does the control panel sometimes get a bit behind on clicks but not impressions?

Or was our good start actually based on existing members thinking "this is new - what happens when I click it?".

The control panel sometimes gets behind on just about any factor compared to any other! I am able to check my stats just once a day now as I know they are not really worth worrying about during a day - but that is easy for me to do as I've been using it for six months, i remember hitting the refresh button every 10 minutes when i started!
