adsense and sharing internet connection with a roomate?

Hello everyone,

I'm new 'round these parts, and, well really new to building websites and adsense and everything in general!

I live with a roomate and we share the same internet connection through the use of a router. I am building a website, and it's something that my roomate would definately be interested in and check out often. I plan on having google adsense on the website.

What are my options here? Telling her "don't click on these ads" isn't good enough for me, because what if she forgets, or her kids are checking it out, they show it to guests/friends, etc. These would be clicks on my ads from the same IP address... this is bad and would get me thrown out of adsense, right? :(

What can I do? Get my own internet connection that is only used on my computer, and that would fix things? Or would it still be bad because of the "same geographical area" thing? I would want to share my website with all the people at work, and it would spread pretty quickly through email and such in my local area.. would this get me banned because it is a potentially a lot of clicks coming from one geographical area?

Kind of lost.. want to earn money from the site, but don't want to get banned from sharing it with my friends and/or the whole roomate sharing IP thing.. any help would definately be appreciated!

Keep your site like a secret.

Well fisrtly what kinda site u r going to have?
Is it personal as ur friend/roomate will show to her children and friends and all?

Is it a blog or something?

Well u may use some anamizers like TOR which are really effective in this case.

Try to manipulate on his computer the user agent string and serve ads only by SSI.

When the SSI encounters his manipulated user agent string, show Amazon instead.

Or try to connect with his computer to Your web site and find out the cookie.

When the SSI encounters his cookie string, show Amazon instead.

But cookies tend to get lost.

Does he use unusual screen resolution?

ISP AND unusual screen resolutuin -> SSI serves Amazon instead of AdSense

No, it's not a blog or personal site.

It's going to be a fun site with some good content that people will be interested in seeing, and it's one of those sites where you find it so cool that you share it with people you know that like the same thing. :) People all over the world that are into this "niche" will enjoy it and (I hope) come back and visit every so often! This includes my roomate and her children, they like what my site will be about and will check it out and share it as well... (but that's the problem that I'm worried about with my adsense account and "clicking on own ads" because we will be sharing the same internet connection, and hence why I asked my question)

jetteroheller, thanks for the suggestion, but I would like to point out, that I am very new to building websites and such!

What you are talking about is beyond my limited knowledge.. :(

First, You should study SSI

Second, the only method without maniplating an other computer and depending on cookies which are likely to vanish:

screen resolution
user agent
ISP

should be unique enough together, that maybe only 0,1% have the same combination.

You're asking for trouble and before you know it you will be posting an "I've been banned thread"!

Are you sure there are ads for your niche?

Are they popular?

Altogether reconsider how you are going to do this.

After all my experiences, people do not visit so often websites mentioned in emails.

When they visit, they do not click ads so often.

I made February last year a long photo reportage.
People from a club supporting this widget wanted immedeately the address. They distributed the URL to around 200 members in the club.

I was concerned, that this would give an extrem click rate. So many ads about exactly this widget. The opposit happened. I was surprised about the extrem low click rate. Since the pages had been at this time not in the search engines indexed, I have this data very clean.

Forget about emails.
Forget about friends, even do not tell them about.
The only what brings visitors interested in ads are the search engines.

Go into Tools/Options/Security in her Internet Explorer browser on HER computer and ad your site to the restricted sites list. I think that will block anyone on that computer from visiting your site.

I think that will block anyone on that computer from visiting your site.

Surely that would be pointless since:

and it's something that my roomate would definately be interested in and check out often.

Or am I missing something?
