Adsense Targeting: Hot or Not?

Is it me or is something going on yesterday and today with Ad targetting? I had a record day yesterday and on good pace today. I notice the ads on my site are more relevant, and frequently change. I used to get almost the same identical ads served continuously and now it seems more random, but still on topic.

I also notice the same thing on other peoples sites that I browse. Old 'standard' ads gone or shuffled while fresh and relevant ads are showing up.

I have noticed that the ads served to my very "area specific" site are spot on. My revenue from adsense is also up which suggeswts that people are finding more clickable (read useful) ads.

So I guess something has improved.

I think Google is "speading the pain" around... After having 5 days of exceptional earnings... now all of a sudden... I am having earnings halfed... click through dived 40% ... can only guess that Google sending crappy ads my way...

Guess I have to wait until the cycle of GOOD ads comes my way again...

Hope it doesn't take TOO long... this is BRUTAL...

I think all the bad publicity that Google is getting lately... and the subsequent tanking of GOOG stock is really taking it's toll...

People not clicking as much as they learn about how Google earns money - people can be sooooo spiteful

Also, I think advertisers might be losing their faith in Google... Hope this is not the case...

So to compensate as best the can... Google is "speading the pain" amongst all publishers... rotating the lower paying ads betwen all the web sites so no one group takes a BIG hit...

Seems fair enough if this is the case, as this is a "team effort" between Google, Advertisers & publishers.

Meant to say "spreading the pain" in the above post... BUT maybe "speeding" is appropriate too... as the "pain" does come in a hurry when they "flick the switch" at the Plex

Of course this is entirely not true whatsoever as I have not seen a decrease whatsoever in two genres I am in.

From what you are saying an overall lack of confidence in Google would create overall lack of clickthroughs which I certainly am not seeing whatsoever in both genres.

Look to other answers - what was the traffic, was it the same roughly as last week, was it for the same keywords the pages are targeted for?

How is the ad quality of random page views on your site? Do the ads match well.

Lots of reason why clickthroughs can drop in a night.

Same if not a little more actual traffic - 90% received from high Google SERPs for pertinent keyword searches...

I publish one of the "authoritative sites" in my niche sector - since early 1997...

Same Ads from same Advertisers... who had literally DOUBLED their advertising bids (at least I was receiving 2X the "normal" earnings per click)... BUT have pulled back to their "normal" PPC range again...

The ONLY notable difference... is that the TECHIES (vast majority of visitors to my site are IT Managers for governments agencies, Fortune 500 companies, businesses larger & small from around the globe) have decidedly DECREASED THEIR AMOUNT OF AD CLICKING... as my click through rate has dropped 28%...

In fact... there has been a FAR STEEPER DROP IN CLICKS FROM FOREIGN VISITORS to my USA-based site, which could reflect the increased animosity toward everything USA by many worldwide lately.

In other words... EVERYTHING else remains the same...

BTW... I'm STILL earning a very nice living... for which I am very thankful to Google & Google AdWords advertsisers.

I'm very happy they must receive "value" in marketing their products and services on my web site... as the same advertsers have been their for over a year and ahalf now. (and increasedtheir bidding substantially over that period of time)

I just thought I was going to enter the UPS Club, with the increase earnings I had been generating the past 5 days...

Still could, maybe... IF my Click Through Rates would rise back to "normal" levels!

is that the TECHIES (vast majority of visitors to my site are IT Managers for governments agencies, Fortune 500 companies, businesses larger & small from around the globe)

And their vagaries blow hot and cold like the weather!

It's more likely that the ads being served up are relevant but of no interest to them...today!

Tomorrow is altogether different whilst they consider how to blow their next spending round having a feel-good-Friday.

VERY True OptiRex...

And thankfully they are clicking ads again today! Seems like it moves in tandem with Google's stock which finished UP $22.15 (6.47%) today!

I guess now Tech is "HOT" again & they are all crusing the NET looking for new "must have" Gizmos to buy

HA! I'll sell them the Gizmos... OR they can click an AdSense ad and look elsewhere... I make $$$ either way!

Psychology is a very interesting subject and one only has to have your President say "Hey, the economy's doing well" and everyone runs off to obtain even more debt!

Got any good gismos at the moment that I really need:-))

Nokia 6101 Flip Phone

Non-aggressive daughter broke the software within a few days!

Great phone, dubious life...however, she's not said anything for a few days so maybe it needed to "settle-in"?

What say you?

Then again, maybe she's not using it! Yeah...:-))

I seriously doubt any of the above-mentioned elements have anything to do with decreased earnings/CTR/EPC, etc. Google's stock price has nothing whatsoever to do with what AdSense serves up; it's absurd to think otherwise.

Is it not more likely that the mid-winter doldrums are affecting some sectors more than others? After the mid-winter holidays (formerly the holiday season, previously Christmas), there is usually a sput of advertising in January followed by a lull in February.

I just looked at my AdSense earnings which stretch back to Day 1 and -- yes -- revenue has not kept pace with traffic/circulation/eyeballs/whatever. It's hard to blame this on Google since millions of new sites have been created, thus slicing the already treacly pie even further.

Very narrow niches may have their own patterns but business in general usually picks up in March/April, so the best course of action is to hold on, clamp down, kick back and wait.

Also, it would be nice to have a few more days in February, if someone can figure out how to accomplish that.

My targeting is always dead on, must be blogs that have all the trouble.

They should name a psychological disorder for the angst this *&$#ing trend causes...

CTR is up, impressions are up, so clicks are up, but EPC is way down. So now I'm getting more traffic, more clicks, and LESS earnings. ARGH! I sure wish Yahoo would find a way to fix their damn targeting so we could tell Google where to stick it once and for all. OK, I'm all better. Very cathartic. Thanks.

My targeting is always dead on, must be blogs that have all the trouble.

I've seen crummier-than-usual targeting over the last few weeks. Lately I haven't been using AdSense on my home page and other root-directory pages because of consistent targeting problems.

And my site isn't a blog: It's a European travel-planning site that hasn't had homepage targeting problems in the past.

My site is NOT a Blog either... It's an Industry authoritative site which has been around in various forms since 1997...

Guaranteed sooner-or-later YOU have visited the site! "Everyone" has... BUT they don't realize it berceuse they ate busy leeching the PERTINENT information that I prominently display (unlike many other web sites in the sector)

I like to say that I have the most famous web site that nobody has ever heard of....

My stats definitely ARE HIGHLY correlated to Google - as I receive over 90% of my traffic from their SERPs... If people don't use Google's search engine... then my traffic drops....

Like what happened with MSN... traffic dropped to only 2% of my visitors... Was up to 65% of visitors back in 1997... BUT the Techies have abandoned using MSN to conduct their research... They discovered a search engine that produced much higher accurate results - Google. And the rest is history - Google at up market share...

NOW the former search giant MSN is TRYING to make a come back... Heck, Steve Balmer is even giving away prizes to attract users back to MSN - so far with limited results.

As far as my click through rate is concerned - I believe OptiRex is dead on with his analysis:

It is highly related to the day-to-day behaviors & psyche of the IT Managers that make up the vast majority of my visitors. Some days they are in a rush because they are in a hurry for information to put out a fire for their bosses... other days, they just were told they got a budget increase for the IT department and are on a shopping spree - which is subject to economic forecasts... which the past few years, if you have not noticed, has been "low visibility going forward" for tech spending... except for the most recent calls for increased corporate spending on IT.

Maybe - I'm still not a FIRM believer - As is being indicated by this quarter's MIXED earnings results being announced by the Tech sector...

OPTIREX - The Nokia Phone is good, BUT I like Motorolo's New Blade Phone much better:

Motorola SLVR V8, includes EDGE, Bluetooth, Mini USB, and Push-to-Talk for connectivity, as well as a VGA camera in a 3.4 ounce package. Battery estimates are 12-17 days of standby and 4-6 hours of talk, which is pretty wicked for a device with almost a 2-inch display. Other fun bits are MPEG-4 video recording and playback, Push-to-Talk, speakerphone, and something called Motorola's Dynamic Idle, which will display our "favorite sports, entertainment, and weather."

I had a pickup over the last two days. Today seems to be starting ok, but reserving judgement. I have also made some changes to my site, so I am not sure if that has affected it. I have noticed more relevant ad's and a larger variety too.

Absolutely horrible targeting for several days now. I operate a jobs website and instead of seeing AdLinks for "Jobs", "Job Search", or "Careers", I'm seeing ads for "Gay"... and that's it!

There's not a single use of that or related terms anywhere on my site.

lol, I published an article this morning about 'Plus sized clothing' and the google ads are about sailing...

"Use your oversized clothes as a sail?"...

Next I'll be getting ads about circus tents...
