It's becoming less and less useful. It seems people who have set up MFA sites are submitting those to Google as news sites and Google is picking up the feed. So I get an email telling me there is a news item about my selected topic and I find links to MFA sites that happen to mention the topic.
I'm going to try Yahoo! news as an alternative and see if it's any better.
And by the way, Yes I realize that now people with MFA sites who are reading this will submit to Google News and make it even worse. Go ahead, give it a try, a minimal standard seems to exist.

I think they would still manually review these sources before adding them...
Where do you see this "submit to google news" thing? Can you please validate your statement? I've never heard of such a thing.
Someone else provided one of the links previously in this thread.
I assumed they crawled known news sites,..
Me too. But that leads to the question of what is a news site? Most people would think the site of a large daily newspaper would qualify. But what if you put up a site to provide news about your basket weaving hobby? Who decides?
And as for the "known" part, by asking for submissions they seem to be asking to "know" about sites that aren't "known" - pardon all the uses of the word.
and besides what would be the point of a very rare occurance, one day, jump in traffic?
Who said anything about one day? I'm seeing the same site come up again and again. Today it's about blue widgets, yesterday it was green widgets, tomorrow it's red disconfabulators, etc.
Farmboy are you signed up for only google news alerts or google news and web alerts?
Both - but only news alerts for this topic.

Are you sure these sites are MFA sites and not just news sites cluttered with ads?
Defining a site as MFA if it's obvious it wouldn't exist except to generate AdSense revenue, the answer is Yes.
These aren't local, national or international news organizations with reporters generating news. And there are no other advertising or revenue means on the site.

If I see bunch of MFA - you are right.
No deal. You can adopt whatever criteria you want and believe what you want. I'm not going to provide specifics and give a zillion people a road map for further pollute the landscape.
I used the form Google provides to report a problem with a News source, we'll see what happens.
