I realize this has probably been discussed at length, but I want to provide my own experience.

I knew all about the maps that show where the ads should run to be noticed. My site is a three column design. The first colum is where the content is placed. In the second column I had the menu information. Below this menu information I ran my Adsense. The third column had a minimal amount of information.

Even though I realized that this construct pushed my adsense down below the menu I was too lazy to move "stuff" around. It required CSS work to make the menu stand out in the third column. On the home page the menu was very long, but on inner pages some of the items collapsed - so I figured moving things around wouldn't amount to much. Boy was I wrong...

One day I took the plunge and moved the menu to the far right hand column. I made the CSS changes and I liked the way it looked over there. This move then allowed the Adsense ads to move up the page and more ads became visible above the fold.

I held off on posting this until I had sufficient information to convince me this made a difference. I know we cannot discuss CTRs, but I think we can make statements like this -

This small changes - which took me all of 30 minutes to make (playing with the colors)- has resulted in a near doubling of my CTR and more than doubled my daily earnings. December will be my best month ever, even with lower traffic than November (not a shopping website).

For those that are putting off these types of things don't - they do make a difference.
