Because I don't want to draw people away from my site.
In that case, why would you want to run advertising at all? Why do you want to have a links page? And why do you choose to publish in a medium (the Web) that was designed to allow and encourage movement from one site to another?
Why do you want to have a links page?
She has five pages of niche specific links, she has a mini Yahoo! on the go:-)
Looking at your site layout I would first recommend trying the horizontal Alinks blended directly beneath your top navigation.
You also have some pages which would take 468 x 60 and various rectangles very nicely either after the text or inbetween sections on the links pages.
I chose the web because it gave me the ability to reach a far greater number of people than any other medium.
This is a product/service that is not as commonly and regularly purchased as others, it requires a wider reach to get enough customers.
Well, I sell a particular service and am worried if I put ads on my home page then people will click on them and leave my site.
Yes, but you'll make money when they do.
What's more, if your site is useful to visitors, they'll come back--which means you'll have opportunities to make money with AdSense (and other revenue sources) with every visit.
On the other hand, if you're selling a service, having ads on your site at all (even on links pages) may send the wrong message. That's something only you can decide, but it may be easier and smarter not to take a chance unless you expect to earn a significant amount of revenue from a handful of AdSense ads on your links pages.
Me, a mini-yahoo? hahha, you're funny
Aha! That's precisly how Yahoo! started, they created a directory of their own links...:-)
I don't know how to make horizontal A links,
You need to log-in to your Adsense account and go to this page:
[google.com...]
Have a good read and look at the examples.
Do you feel I would be better building content and more targeted links vs. doing the ad thing with google?
That's a good one just before I go out for a Xmas night beer!
Obviously buidling better content is always a good idea if one has the time.
Do your links pages pay you anything, they are simply reciprocated I assume?
Checking your keywords in Google for results and competing sites do not seem to throw up many Adsense ads therefore it's possible your niche does not have many publishers nor advertisers because of lack of demand.
If you're getting more than a few hundred page impressions per day I would definitely say try out Adsense and see what happens.
You're using CSS therefore adding and removing the code is no problem for you.
It's interesting what you are doing so good luck.
My links do not pay me anything, I am trying and succeeding at getting topic specific links and then just putting my link on their site and not having to reciprocate.
Yes, I enjoy my business a lot, although it's a lot of hard work, I do get pleasure in the testimonials from my customers and repeat ones too.
Enjoy your christmas beer!
