New Adsense Ads?

I am seeing some adsense ads that take the place of the three smaller ads in my tower, but instead is one large ad. The ad is for a company and is not a PSA in any way, though might appear to be a PSA.

Is anyone else seeing this? Is there a way to turn it off?

Thanks,

These have been running for a while. My understanding was when $G determines that you will make more by running one big high paying advertiser they will dedicate the entire space to that advertiser.

However, lately, I'm thinking that in many (or all) cases these are site targetted ads that are paying on CPM.

I know many of my site targetted campaigns are displaying this way on the publisher's site.

Sounds like an "expanded ad"--I would not assume it's an ad from a CPM campaign. So far as I know, my site has never been targeted by a CPM campaign, but I see expanded ads all the time.

(I'm not sure that they increase income by getting more clicks--I wonder if they force advertisers to bid higher to get into the top ad spot--they can't assume they'll get seen if they are #3 or #4....)

CPM ads can be either text or image ads, and are always site-targeted. CPM text ads will expand to take up the entire ad unit.

Yes, but you can also get expanded ads that are NOT site-targeted CPM ads.

When you see a text ad that has expanded to take up more of an ad unit or the entire ad unit, you may be seeing either a site-targeted or a keyword-targeted text ad.

Site-targeted text ads appear when advertisers select specific sites on which to run their ads, on a pay-per-impression basis. Their ads are then expanded to fill an entire ad unit, making site-targeted ads even more appealing for advertisers, and resulting in higher bids, meaning higher earnings for our publishers.

Keyword-targeted text ads may also be expanded when we determine that a larger ad will perform better for a particular page. Our AdSense technology will automatically determine the optimal number of ads to display and will only show fewer ads when it improves monetization.

the one i am seeing seems to be on many pages, though sometimes it disappears if i refresh the page.

i'm concerned because the ads it replaced are more relevant to the content on the pages they are on. The bigger ad is less relevant and much more obviously commercial (a phone card site that could be relevant to ANY page of any site really...).

Now THAT sounds more like site-targeted.

Add it to your block list for a few days and see what happens....
