Do they make reasonable money for the effort?
What percentage of visitors per capita of regional population is considered good?
Or do we Brits just not bother since we have a myriad of local information available through free press, local radio, TV etc?
Upsides? Downsides?
Do you know of any successful UK community site? All the ones I have seen are so dire amateurish doesn't even begin to describe them...
I agree that Adsense wouldn't seem to be the obvious advertising medium of choice however with the Adwords advertisers being able to specify it could be a more precise alternative maybe?
The problem I have is actually finding such a UK site!

One thing I've done to attract viewers interested in buying stuff it to promote locally-made products and real estate. It helps the community and my earnings at the same time!
I also supplement my Adsense revenue by offering premium features on a subscription basis.
I'm not making enough from the site to quit my day job, but am making a nice little extra income from it. The site is also a hobby so it's not just about the money. The money is just icing on the cake. Good luck.
