I am currently using 468 x 60 size banner size ads. I tried 728 x 90 leaderboard size but they are just too big. I also think the leaderboards look too jam-packed with text since they usually contain 4 ads. Crowded text is a user turn-off in my opinion.
The 468 x 60 are fine, but I think they are falling short of what could be a better potential.
Here is what I really need.
728 x 60 size with a maximum of 3 ads.
Any more than than 3 ads looks way too cramped. I basically need the width of the leaderboard with the height of the banner. Did I mention a MAXIMUM of 3 ads?
The reduced height makes it much much easier to fit content above and below without ad whitespace pushing content further below the fold. Those 30 extra pixels would really make a difference to me.
This is what I really need. Hope ASA sees it.
Anyone else, please comment or explain what you could use in ad size.
I sort of don't understand why G doesn't either add more ad formats or make them more flexible. The more we can better work AS into our sites, the more money everyone makes...
728x60 isn't one of them. They did just add a 300 x 600 half page ad unit size, but I couldn't see AdSense adopting that one for a new ad unit size, at least not for regular publishers ;)
I'll pass your feedback along to the product team as they're always interested in this type of request.
In the meantime, though, please stick to the ad formats available on [google.com...] ;)
why not a 260x60 next to the 468x60? 260+468 = 728!
Thanks for the idea oddsod. I'll have to try it out.
The only concern I might have would be the unbalanced look of the ads.
AdSense uses the Internet Advertising Bureau's standard ad sizes for regular publishers:

Thanks for the input Jen. I was already aware of this however. I did title the post 'Non-Standard' for a reason. I'm not trying to be contrary, but I think Google carries enough weight to create some of it's own standards.
Besides that, a size standard can be used by anyone. I think the more the merrier. Different companies can support the ones they want. Eventually the most effective will dominate. IAB standards seem to be a real limitation in my view, as if they've been bestowed upon us by word on high.
IMHO - Google could easily start creating some of their own formats and I'm sure many would be widely adopted. Look how many non-standards Microsoft has created that have become de-facto standards.
