I'm new to SEO and I'm encountering some issues with how Google indexes my domain names, and I've been struggling to find the optimal solution. Let me break down the domains we have:
- Our primary marketing website - the domain is a dot comp for our company name
- A landing page - this page has a completely different domain name than our primary website
- The login portal for our application - this shares the same domain as our primary marketing website but has a "portal." in front of the company name
Our problem lies in our landing page and our portal login appearing as top results when searching for our company name on Google, while our primary marketing site is not showing up at all. It only appears if you scroll down and click "repeat the search with the omitted results included."
My initial theory is that because our landing page shares the same title and meta description as our primary marketing website, our primary marketing site might be penalized. Additionally, the landing page has minimal content, serving mainly as a landing page with just an image, a header, and a CTA linking to our main marketing website, which has much richer content.
So, I have a couple of questions:
1) What's the best approach to ensure our primary marketing website ranks in the results since it's currently being omitted? It's the priority over our landing page. I can't permanently redirect or block our landing page from being crawled because it serves other purposes for our app.
2) Is it advisable to add our landing page and login page to our primary marketing site's sitemap XML to assist Google with site linking? Are there any concerns considering the landing page is a different domain?
Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated. I've been wracking my brain for days trying to figure this out.
