Too many 'Buy' words on page hurts rankings?

So I'm wondering... if you put a scrolling ticker on top of every page (literally every page) with your latest special offers, containing keywords like buy, price, deal, money off, etc, and it ends up that you have as many as 10 to 20 of these words up there, is that going to hurt your page rankings?

Im trying to convince them to put the offers in a sidebar instead, shown further down the page, but the words will still be there.

Strictly speaking they're not affiliate links because they all point to product pages on the same site

It sounds like it is a sort of menu scrolling across the top of the page. It can distract people who might otherwise scroll down the page. If you want visitors to stay on that area it might make sense, otherwise it may be a distraction. I would worry less about words affecting the ranking than about keeping visitors from using the page - but a lot depends on which action might be more beneficial both to the site and the visitors.

It is extremely unlikely to affect ranking, but i'd make sure it's noindex so it doesn't get misinterpreted.

I'm not keen on that scrolling idea, as a user: It's far too distracting.

Instead of scrolling, why not just have a banner direct to an offers page so that it's the users choice.

New users might walk away, recurring users will develop "ad blindness". From a user point of view it will not work the way intended.

As for g and ranking they will see it for what it is, "non-content"---once again, not quite the desired result. Will it impact rankings? Can't say, but it will not INCREASE rankings as it is duplicative material across x-number of pages (ie. a menu/navigation) which is not ranked one way or the other.

if they really want it at the top then i guess i'll just stick it in a lazy-loaded iframe. at least the words won't be on every page then
