Google has just published its webspam report for 2022, and it's clear it's finding more spam than the 2021 report. [webmasterworld.com] It says the SpamBrain detected five times more spam than the previous year, and 50 times more link spam sites were detected.

Yeah, right. Perhaps SpamBrain hasn't reached the UK yet, where the problem is far worse since the last update (or should that read downdate?).

Over the years I've read many posts here which describe sites that are only 1-2 years old, yet already have thousands of pages of content. I've never understood how someone can create content at such a fast rate unless either they are scraping it from other sites or else churning out very low quality pages like the old dime novelists who used to churn out a new book every four days.

In the Google article I didn't see any indication of what percentage of the content on the web is judged as spam by SpamBrain, but in my view it ought to be quite a high percentage.

Aye. This is but one of the many situations where rate, proportion or percentage is more meaningful than raw numbers.

But I still miss the old Pure Spam page, which provided the www equivalent of slowing down to look at a gory accident.

You could always just run a commercial query on Google.com. /s
