Traditionally December is a good month for some and the lowest of the year for others.

This morning I had one Netherlands bot hit one page 60 times in 16 seconds, not a record I know but darned annoying all the same.

Something massive is happening since midnight on Saturday. From 12am to 10:30am so far traffic has vanished. Search traffic is down 47% and direct is down almost as much. It appears to be hitting EN language traffic...USA -62%, UK -59%, CA -68%, AU -50%. I have never seen drops like this so hopefully it will be short lived!

Just a joke, got spammy sites above me again of a few paragraphs of my lovely 8k word article that even has a youtube video self-created, my site is 15 year s old. Loosing the will tbh. Even looked up jobs. What is the content is king. Old sites don't seem to have the respect they deserve anymore. Crappy throw away Wordpress websites with bot generated content. It is embarrassing the sites google is favoring for my niche. Why would they send the user to these crappy sites, who knows.

Is anyone else seeing a huge drop (or increase) today? I'm at -40% of my search traffic at 2pm.

Same here; it is like the October spam update, but hitting again for me, I hope this is not the case.

Blackhat test sites are unaffected and growing rapidly... You know the blackhat sites do not get hit mostly... LOL

Yes, they seem to target white-hat normal sites. It is such a mess.

Just noticed another new site (less than 1-year-old) outranked my old trusted site. What is going on? Clearly, there is nothing in the search algorithm that favors old timers, old sites, that are true trusted sources of information. It's a complete mess. I am a published Author with a publishing house and they still rank bad sites above me with my lovely long posts that give real information. Just a blimming joke. My 16-year-old site seems to not matter anymore, if this carries on I will just give up. It just seems a mess and if you got WordPress (very easy to set up) AI, then its good to go, seems these 3rd-word countries can outrank the most sophisticated Enterprise platforms that cost >$100k to manage and set up. Joke.

Looks like a one day update. My traffic has zoomed right back and is strong today. I also noticed a one day shake-up of the serps. One competitor skyrocketed and then right back down the next day. I tend to find that these events reveal the trajectory of the competition. The ones who shoot upward will slowly climb over time. The ones who drop will leak serps or stay stable at best. Just my theory, observed over many of these one day shakeups since 2021.

Some of the worst traffic I've ever had. I am actually looking forward to a broad core update to come through. Either fix it or wipe me out so I can move on from this nonsense once and for all.

For all of you that have been hit badly:

1) when did the decline start?
2) what kind of site do you have, commercial or informational?

Keep in mind that from about March of 2021 through December of 2021 or so, Google was strongly pushing informational sites and commercial sites vanished...even very large corporate sites were not faring well. It appears that now Google has turned the tables and commercial sites are doing better but purely info sites are hammered. Could it also be that info sites are more easily targeted by spammers and clones because all they have to do is scrape your content and everyone else's and watch the adsense roll in? They can't really scrape commercial sites in the same way. There is no motivation. All of this can easily revert again according to Google's bottom line needs and whim.

We've had an encouraging hint of recovery since Friday. It started with an increase of 4.7 percent in Google traffic on Friday, compared to the same day of the week a year ago. The increase on Saturday was 9.93 percent, and today (Sunday) it was 13.11 percent.

Looking at landing page statistics, it would appear that we're enjoying improvements more or less across the board. Some pages are up, others are down a bit, but there are more ups than downs.

Also significant, IMO, is the fact that we're seeing week-over-week Google traffic increases (and traffic increases in general) at a time when we're usually approaching our annual low. For our editorial travel site, the period from early December until Christmas or New Year's is usually pretty comatose, even without the current economy's mood of doom and gloom.

Since Friday, Google traffic on my website has recovered to the level it was before the spam update, and it's doing pretty well so far today, too. If I see it correctly, many of my most important keywords have recovered as well. But since we're talking about Google, that doesn't mean much.

@Micha is your website in German or English, Micha?

Wondering if these movements are global or English-only.

@martin_ice_web

Same here; my traffic was the same when I had my first weekend over three years ago, LOL!

Now, today my traffic is bursting... Honestly, I am starting to get some tinfoil hat hairdo going on... Is Google trolling me? Why? Its almost Christmas! I am not even going to say things are up; it seems extreme swings are going both ways nearly every few days; this is beyond bizarre.

@Bibermann My website is in German, however, friends website operators who run English websites also see an increase, but not quite as strong.

Huge drop here. Weather niche...

You need to add more EAT to your site. EAT is everything. Who would want to trust a temperature readout or a forecast if it didn't have a nice author picture and author bio about the person who authored this wonderful piece of literature...

On a serious note - if Google really deprecates backlinks and boosts EAT (Evil, Atrocious, Terrible), there is simply no way we are going to have quality SERPs. It is going to be 100% spam. And mostly from high "authority" spammers.

Lower traffic than usual for Sunday at 44% however today so far back to average I must also add that RealWorld business enquiries have picked-up but NOT from the "West", they are very thin on the ground.

@christianz - Weather forecast with live images. I think that's a lot of trust. It's a big website that I've been the head of the project since 2013. So don't say bull**** about you don't know.

@renatovieira how big is your current traffic loss compared to when the drops first started? Was it around May Core Update or in August/September? Have you been seeing any recovery?

@beaverman - My drop is gradual since May Update. There are days when it is a huge drop, the next day it recovers, but it continues in free fall. From may until now, effective loss of -50%. My website has 100% legit/reviewed content and no linking scheme.

@ichthyous I saw a big initial boost from the May update. It tended down slowly over the whole summer with two big drops end of September and end of October and it's been a slow decline ever since. Every week is about a 5% decrease.

@renatovieira I think christianz was being a little sarcastic but not mean on purpose; we are all feeling it right now, and it is easy to get frustrated, but remember, we need to direct it at Google. I understand your frustration. It's a horrible time for everyone.

As for E-A-T, as I have said in previous posts, I got important backlinks naturally acquired from just having a good site. My DA hovers between 78 to 80 these days, yet crappy websites that manually steal my posts now outrank me since the October spam update. Before this, I had no issues since I would surpass them. Sometimes the original post is not even in the top 100. It is blacklisted, yet a copycat gets ranked 1 to 5 with my stolen content a week later, WTF Google?.

These crappy spam, blackhat, or just plain thieving sites have DA of 5 to, at best, 25, but have been doing this sort of crap to other people's sites before targeting mine due to the quality for like 5 to 10 years, but literally, some of these sites are 99% copied word for word. Also, all these sites in question have comments. I got heaps of comments and interactions, which shows, besides the authority with my high D.A., trustfulness since it's real communication with a community. Also, I add more details than anyone. I would add a competitor; in fact, my site grew since I added more images to explain to people that do not follow text; it takes me ages to take images and watermark them.

To me, this shows that E-A-T means nothing or it is broken. It shows that their spam filters are broken, do not identify so many sites we all see and know in our niches, and cannot remove the actual crud. At the same time, our websites get hit, showing Google's search team has no clue, has broken things, and does not have the ability, or even scarier, to understand what is going on. Listening to Podcasts, I laugh hard since it's, yeah, most of us know it's rubbish.

Or it's a broader conspiracy, tin-foil.

I've seen steady growth since the May update - 1st leg was a 300% increase(!) in May, the second leg was a 50% increase in mid-July, then the September update added another 50% to the traffic, and the past couple of weeks I've been bumped in the rankings again, so it's up another +30%.

The website is 4 years old, and I've consistently added content over the past years, even before the May update.
E-A-T is not an algorithm function, it's a guideline for manual reviews, so if you've lost/gained traffic, it's definitely not EAT related, unless you can see ratershub in your referring websites, which means you've gotten a manual penalty/boost.

Adding to my comment, I do understand everyone is frustrated with losing traffic, I get it, I also lost more than 90% of my traffic on one of my websites over the spam update (which I had to give up on eventually) - the thing is, Google tests their algorithm updates and measure tonnes of metrics and as long as its working for 51% of SERPs, they push it out. You gotta adapt, analyze the SERPs, understand what Google prefers, and do the same. Stop clinging to your beliefs and the things YOU think should rank.
"oh I wrote a 290k word article but AI is outranking me", too bad, stop writing long articles.
That's exactly why "black hat" people outrank you - they know they'll get caught by Google, so they actively try to learn and improve their methods and adapt.
Sorry if I offended anyone, just wanted to share a different view on things.
