I was wondering if a sites sells a product Abc-xyz and you buy the domain name abc-xyz.com and use a redirect to the business fastxyz.com

Then use this keyword in content with in the site, in blog posts as a link.

Perhaps even getting one or 2 external links using nofollow.

Would this be effective at gaining positioning in the SERP for the targeted keyword

You will crash and burn on E.A.T. by doing stuff like this. The Google Rater handbook describes how raters should detect this type of thing. Highly recommended reading.

If you want to try it anyway go ahead but what's likely to happen is nothing, at best. The domain you snapped up and redirected hasn't put in the time to generate any history so there's no benefit really, just long term(and long lasting) risk.

No, though it might possibly help pick up a few human visitors if your target market includes a lot of people who guess at a site's name by typing “businessname.com” into their address bar.

Unfortunately, I tend to think the only people who still do this are readers of the present site.
