Google's latest Search Team Podcast is focussed on Image SEO and Search.

Is Google even aware that an image sometimes blocks a web result if the image isn't shown directly beside the result and appears in the image carousel instead? If your page would have ranked #2 for a web query it is often not shown at all if you have a #2 image in the carousel, though on occasion the web result falls to 50+.
Watch your web traffic if you optimize for image traffic, preferably on a page by page basis.
Optimizing for web and for image search at the same time would make more sense if one didn't block the other.
