System: The following message was cut out of thread at: [webmasterworld.com...]

There's been a number of fluctuations in Google's SERPs during January, and Google was silent on any of these changes. We know there were changes because all the indicators, and the discussions showed that Google's ongoing tweaks continue. It may not have been a core update to report in January.

As usual, i'll start off with a quick round-up of some of the Google news and stories in January.

My global site struggled to 91% on Friday however after 13.5 hours of my Googleday I'm at 26.3% so far, I can only assume things will get lower and lower as people will inevitably cut back their spending habits.

What's the point of commenting anymore. We all have bigger problems to worry about now. Basic survival. Several sites will be going offline soon. It's been fun WebmasterWorld.

Unfortunately its not the case. My direct traffic is the same. My Google traffic is being destroyed like Ukraine.

Hey, guys! I'm from Ukraine.

The first thing - my country is not destroyed, we are fighting for every single piece of our land, there are hundreds of dead russian troops in Kiev, Kharkiv, and other cities. As I see - this war won't end in such a single way as Putin thinks.

The second thing - I can't understand the situation, can someone explain? My website's traffic took a deep on 23-24, when the war started. Traffic dropped for the US, UK, many countries in Europe. Can't get the situation, which reason is it related to? During the first day of the war ok, I understand - people were reading news, ok. But now the traffic didn't recovered. I'm pretty much doubt so many people involved in reading the news now, and not like in the first days.

The question is - how do you think, is traffic drop is related to the G update? Or what's the problem? Because if this is the update, it will be the best "gift" Google could give me...

I feel deep sorrow about your country. I hope it would end shortly.

I experience huge drop in my traffic in every single update throughout the rolling out process, from beginning to end. Even if SERP looks stable, traffic drops. No clarification that make sense. Indeed, I got tired of those updates.

I'm pretty much doubt so many people involved in reading the news now, and not like in the first days.

As a generalisation people are in a preparatory panic mode! In my county yesterday petrol stations were running out of fuel, local supemarkets are seeing people stocking-up on basic foodstuffs.

Furthermore, especially in the UK however I do realise it is happening elsewhere, the reality of massive energy prices is suddenly dawning on many people since the increases are far, far higher than being reported and it is something I have been reporting since last September yet no one took any notice. Many people are calculating their new energy costs and inevitably general spending will be hit.

As an example my energy costs, I work from home, for several years has been USD 150 per month, my current rate is USD 450.00 per month HOWEVER my new rate from April will be USD 550.00 per month. My gas unit price alone will have increased 276% in 6 months and, believe me, this is an increase the vast majority of Brits will be seeing unless they have a very long-forward supply agreement. PLUS there will inevitably be another increase this Sept/Oct too .!.!.!

Therefore USD 400.00 per month over 12 months is USD 4,800 of less discretionary spending money only going one way, from me to energy companies ... Obviously I am looking at ways to reduce this consumption and have already put this into action.

To put it another way, in the UK imagine 1 million households with USD 5000 per annum less discretionary spending, that is USD 5,000,000,000, that is USD 5 billion, remember this when you wonder why traffic is down and spending is less.

Yeah since the war started I traffic has slipped about 12%. Not good and pushed us just below 50% of total traffic the same time last year...

Google Discover promotes utter clickbait garbage. Titles aren't far off "you won't believe what X just did."

CTR must play a big role in Discover rankings.

As for my traffic still massively down YOY. Ukraine playing a role but still think since my penalty got lifted something else has pushed me down.

Google makes more money in the web search. Then, what happened if the price of ads in websites like mine is getting lower? Companies would change the behavieur and they will stop investing in the web seach. Solution: To reduce traffic in websites and the price of ads keeps stable. That is the reason why the traffic is getting lower but the price of your inventory is keeping the same or even getting lower.

That is the reason why during some weeks, they give the first position to websites that do not include any banners.

Sunday my global site achieved 39.7%, coming up to 11 hours of my Googleday and so far I'm at 19% ... I'm not saying that this is the first-ever time, I simply cannot remember the last time, however this morning I had zero realworld business enquiries.

My busiest UK focussed site was 128% Saturday and 99% Sunday and for the month until today 99.9%.

Whilst I am not a Google fanboy I am certainly not blaming them ... At the moment.

Without any explanation, every monday the drop is big. Adding to this "latest update" plus the war, the situation couldn't be different, huge drop again :|

Three hours later and I'm flatlining across all sites. Talking with other international widget suppliers and they are experiencing similar.

I sold my main site a couple of months ago and am left with two extremely minor sites, one of which I am starting to rebuild.

So I have very little volume of visitors to judge by, but today, the number has suddenly dropped to just above zilch. The drop could be because of my updates, G's updates or Ukraine. I suspect Ukraine.

My organic traffic has been dropping around 20-30% since february 25. And still haven't hit the bottom, today is even worse. Recipe niche.

Another thing I see is that G is hardly indexing or ranking my pages added since December.

I just about doubled the number of pages (still rather small) with higher-quality contents (this is not a blog) in Jan and Feb. G shows that it has crawled and "indexed" some of them, but search results show that my traffic from G are mostly from pages added before October.

Also, from their crawl stats, I see that they crawl my site much less than before, around 2k requests per day.

It could be that G is cutting costs in anticipation of downturn, which is by now a certainty with the US using the nlear option and starting financial war.

Seeing a good 15%-20% down since the war started. I agree, if you put in baked hot cross buns you would expect to see mum websites with recipes. Instead, we get Vogue or a news site reporting on this - that has nothing to do with cooking. Tired of this, these mag/news sites reporting on any topic to get traffic. Bring back the days of niches Google, and PLEASE stop these news/mag sites just being a content farm.

I too am seeing a drop (24th Feb) in my niches (automotive, arts, household) - comparing direct traffic to organic search reveals there was probably an update to the algo which lost me a few top 3 positions. Direct traffic is down 10% but organic for me is down around 20% over this same period (mainly for high volume keywords - low volume keywords are still providing steady traffic flows with no drop at all).

This matched the pattern I saw around 14th & 15th which I put down to the holidays but now I suspect something was being tested/rolled out.

I'm seeing a lot of new made for ads/affiliate link types of sites ranking well with very little backlink juice. They typically scrape/spin and reword text from my sites (and others) focussing on very specific keywords, so where my site covers 4 or 5 keyword areas in one article, they have split this off into 5 pages for each with good heading structure, lists, bullet points and schema markup.

I feel that links are largely being ignored now and instead page layout, content, and design are the factors that win here which kind of opens the door to scrapers, rewriters, and spinners. Where will they get the content from when all the old sites which invest time and energy in proper journalism and research have closed?!

If I was Google I would only list pages that have existed a long time (were first to print on a topic), and that were recently updated or amended and that have backlinks, and at least allow more focus on a sites overall rank/reputation rather than individual pages this in my opinion would crush most of this spam/thin content and allow the established sites a chance to continue.
