For what seems forever, Google has been changing the titles it uses in the SERPs, but it became a hot topic again recently when WebmasterWorld Members discovered some new changes to page titles. [webmasterworld.com...]

Google has just published a new document giving a little more information about how it generates page titles.

Google says that "we made changes to our system which means that title elements are now used around 87% of the time, rather than around 80% before."

Google says it new system goes way beyond the page title, and uses other elements, including page content.

Although, Google's guidance for page titles has remained relatively constant, it seems these changes of late were to resolve issues, for example, of repetitive titles, or out-of-date titles.

The document doesn't mention very short titles, say one or two words. In my experience google's algorithm will often add some more words.

As a hypothetical example, suppose I have a website about rare dog breeds, with a separate page for each breed, and html titles such as:
Otterhound
American Dingo
Finnish Spitz

Google's search results might show new titles as follows:
Rare Dog Breeds - Otterhound
Rare Dog Breeds - American Dingo
Rare Dog Breeds - Finnish Spitz

@ aristotle, I have to wonder if they count that as 'rewriting' the title because my impression (I've not kept a formal count) is that there are a LOT more edited titles than only 1 in 5 in every SERP on average.

FranticFish -- Well, as I said, the document doesn't mention the expanding (rewriting) of very short titles, so you could be right.

I think better to write the tags ourselves .It has almost 80 % chance to be displayed.

@Soumik ... Welcome to Webmasterworld.

I've had very few (less than five) rewritten. KISS and most times it works great. As usual, avoid keyword stuffing of any kind.
